Job Description:

McLean\’s multidisciplinary programs treat a broad range of psychiatric illnesses across the full continuum of care.

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Mental Health Technician (MHT) provides direct patient care and participates in the therapeutic milieu.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the RN in providing direct patient care
  • Documenting patient information accurately and timely
  • Establishing therapeutic relationships with patients while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Participating in patient rounds or team meetings
  • Completing assigned patient care tasks
  • Identifying behaviors that may lead to crises and using techniques to de-escalate situations
  • Managing complex patient situations and schedules according to policies, promoting least restrictive interventions
  • Communicating patient status changes to the RN
  • Following standards of care and protocols
  • Remaining alert and awake during shifts
  • Performing Point of Care testing (POC)

All employees should have basic computer skills for communication, clinical, and administrative systems. Completion of electronic medical records training and achieving 80% accuracy on a competency test within 30 days of hire are required.

Working effectively in the therapeutic milieu includes:

  • Participating in planning and implementing patient groups
  • Supervising recreational and other activities
  • Providing direction, support, and supervision to patients
  • Adhering to nursing policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Conducting safety assessments during checks

Maintaining a safe unit environment involves:

  • Reporting issues with cleaning or equipment
  • Participating in inventory management
  • Promoting a clean and organized environment

Supporting patients with activities of daily living:

  • Addressing hygiene needs
  • Meeting nutritional needs
  • Providing support during tests and procedures
  • Supervising patient transportation and outings

Professional growth and competency:

  • Completing mandatory training
  • Identifying areas for development
  • Maintaining competency for specific age groups
  • Seeking feedback and participating in debriefings

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Preferably two years of college and one year of clinical experience, preferably in a psychiatric setting
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred
