Reporting to our Managing Director, this leadership role is responsible for the commercial aspects of the Civil Engineering business with accountability for the Pre Construction and Commercial teams and their output. You will oversee the delivery of competitive and comprehensive project bids, the commercial management of the Civils projects and help secure new business and maintain McLaughlin & Harvey’s standing in the industry.

What you will be doing

  • Oversee, direct and be responsible for the Pre Construction and Commercial teams to source, bid and commercially manage the delivery of the Civils Projects and business
  • Staff management of the Pre Construction and Commercial teams of the Civils business
  • Nurture and promote continuous improvements with the Pre Construction and commercial staff, business practise and policies
  • Work strategically with HR on all aspects of employee relations to nurture a culture of continuous improvement and transparency in line with the Company Values and associated behaviours
  • Promote company values in all dealings with other employees, clients, subcontractors, and other external contacts
  • Taking responsibility for developing new business opportunities with existing and new McLaughlin & Harvey clients
  • Where appropriate, assist with business development activities with the Head of Business Development and manage bid or negotiation process to win new business
  • Identifying opportunities for the Civils business
  • Supporting the Board in developing a bid winning and profit-making strategy for the Civils business
  • Oversee the commercial aspects of the full life cycle of all Civils Projects from identifying tender opportunities, through the tendering process to Project close out and where necessary leading the tendering team on specific projects, involving key Supply Chain Partners as appropriate
  • Bringing innovation and commercially beneficial methods to support the tendering and delivery process
  • Develop and maintain close relationships with clients, consultants and supply chain to anticipate or identify any issues and resolve them. Continuously improve client experience and obtain information to improve our company and obtain repeat and negotiated business
  • Maintain regular review of the performance of the team and prepare comprehensive business reports for the Board
  • Oversee the entire commercial aspect of the Civils business from identifying tendering opportunities through to project closure to protect and enhance the commercial success of the projects
  • Oversee the resolution of any projects with disputes both formal and informal.
  • Report monthly to the Board on the financial performance and status of the Civils projects
  • Oversee and agree with the Board the commercial strategy of the Civils business
  • Leading the production of accurate and comprehensive estimates and cost plans for the Civils business

What We’re Looking For

  • Qualified to a high standard in Quantity Surveying, Estimating, Construction or Civil Engineering with proven relevant experience
  • Desirable membership of RICS / CIOB /A. Cost E./ICE/EI
  • Experience of working on Major Programmes and Projects
  • Experience of working in the Civil Engineering field particularly marine, rail, infrastructure and flood defence sectors
  • Experience in leading and managing several teams
