With the support from the Lead Powertrain Controls Base Mapping Engineer, the role involves being responsible for building and validating the base engine calibration that forms the core of the engine control strategies in support of our Performance, Driveability, Emissions and Diagnostics attributes. A key emphasis is on the transfer of steady-state data to achieve exceptional engine control in the highly dynamic environment of the vehicle.
The role is expected to be based in the UK but may require travel to other test locations in the UK and around the world.
Principal accountabilities:
- Working with data derived from engine dyno, vehicle or simulations, the candidate will be required to manage and interpret large datasets and understand how this can be modelled in reduced form through a physically based model representation inside the Engine Control Unit (ECU).
- Understanding the requirements for accuracy in engine plant models such as torque, air-charge estimation etc. to meet requirements for achieving powertrain attributes such as performance, emissions and driveability.
- Perform vehicle tests to determine the accuracy of model-based control strategies under transient conditions.
- Understand interactions with control functions that form part of the driveability targets, emissions compliance requirements as well as those for on-board diagnostics.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement and further development of analysis methods and processes using algorithms and statistical modelling techniques as well as development of tools that can help other engineers better interpret engine data.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement and further development of control strategies to enhance the attributes related to Performance.
Knowledge, skills & experience:
- Education to Degree level in a relevant Engineering discipline – mechanical, electrical, aeronautical with a strong mathematical focus.
- Demonstrable ability to take an engineering problem and develop an analytical solution in code such as MATLAB, Python, C++ etc.
- Experience of engine testing on a dyno or other test facility would be a real plus.
- Sound understanding of thermodynamic, fluid and controls fundamentals.
- Great attention to detail and an attitude to produce ‘right first time’ quality work.
- Good driving experience, confidence in driving high-performance cars and clean driving licence would be ideal.
