Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a High Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Engineer to join our HPC team and help maintain a high-end service that meets the demanding requirements of the McLaren Racing computational engineering environment. This includes managing and optimising advanced computing environments that support Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), FEA, simulation, AI workloads and other advanced technologies. This opportunity is primarily infrastructure-based, although the team provides a wide range of services including software development. Principal Accountabilities
- Provide day-to-day operational support for the McLaren Racing HPC estate: manage and resolve hardware and software issues.
- Assist in hardware and software upgrade programmes to implement new technologies.
- Identify bottlenecks and help maximise performance of HPC applications.
- Offer Linux advice and support to racing engineers and HPC users.
- Stay current on the latest HPC and industry developments and evaluate new technologies such as CPUs, GPUs, HMB, memory, high-speed interconnects, web-based software technologies and parallel high-performance computing application tuning and optimisation.
Knowledge Areas, Skills and Experience
- Knowledge of Linux (mandatory).
- Knowledge of HPC hardware, including clusters, storage and interconnects.
- Experience with HPC/Linux system and package management tools.
- Administration and use of HPC batch job schedulers.
- Understanding of computer architecture, CPU, GPU, memory and I/O subsystems.
- Strong Python and/or shell scripting and debugging skills.
- Storage knowledge; familiarity with HPC parallel file systems and general file sharing protocols.
- Networking skills.
- Experience with virtualization and visualisation (VDI).
- Familiarity with monitoring tools for systems and infrastructure.
- Experience developing and maintaining automation using DevOps/CI tools and processes.
- Knowledge of both SQL and No-SQL databases.
- Documentation skills.

- Degree in a related subject such as Computer Science, or relevant industry certification.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and analytical approach, with attention to detail.
- Self-starter, able to identify requirements independently and propose solutions.
- A team player who can also make independent decisions with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to learn from others, share knowledge and promote continuous improvement of processes.
- High level of personal commitment; occasional availability on weekends and outside of regular hours may be required.
