Purpose of the Role:

Provide full life-cycle electronic and electrical design support for the build, calibration, inspection and maintenance for all aspects of the electronic systems used for the Formula 1 Racing programme. This includes hands-on involvement in the physical delivery of on-car instrumentation, as well as contributing to ongoing engineering projects aimed at improving the quality and reliability of vehicle data through continuous development of advanced instrumentation systems.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Prepare, calibrate, and maintain precision control and instrumentation sensors for the F1 racing programme.
  • Ensure high system reliability, serviceability, and data quality across all instrumentation activities.
  • Coordinate daily and seasonal tasks with internal teams to align with project and racing timelines.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers on production, calibration, and fault resolution.
  • Generate and maintain accurate documentation to support traceability and compliance.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance reliability, reduce weight, and simplify maintenance.
  • Monitor equipment performance, trends, and escalate technical or quality issues as needed.
  • Conduct root-cause investigations and support fault correction and reliability initiatives.
  • Manage cost-related considerations and recommend savings in design, materials, and processes.
  • Ensure compliance with FIA technical and financial regulations.
  • Uphold safety standards and support adherence to HSE and COSHH guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Strong background in motorsport, automotive, or aerospace electronic systems.
  • Proven expertise in assembling and testing high-reliability wiring harnesses using motorsport-standard materials and connectors.
  • Skilled in using hand tools, soldering irons, multimeters, and electronic test equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in precision instrumentation, transducers, and calibration processes used in professional motorsport.
  • Comfortable interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and electronic documentation.
  • Experience with precision electronics, including handling small surface-mount components (e.g. 0603 size).
  • Familiar with CAN, Ethernet, and other high-speed communication hardware layers.
  • Understanding of F1 or high-level motorsport environments, timelines, and technical protocols.
  • Experience working with composite and 3D-printed materials for enclosures and housings.
  • Mentored and trained junior staff and new team members in a structured way.
  • Knowledge of safe handling practices for complex and high-value electronics (e.g. ESD and HV precautions).
  • Built and managed large, complex harness systems with over 100 wires, including EMI shielding and environmental protection.
  • Familiar with business systems for work planning, component tracking, batch tracing, and reliability management.
  • CAD design experience (mechanical/electrical/electronic) is a plus.

McLaren Racing is based at the iconic McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) near Woking.
