As an End of Line Paint Principal Technician within the Ultimate Series Paint Shop at McLaren Automotive, you will play a critical role in delivering world‑class paint finishes on some of the most exclusive and technologically advanced vehicles in the world. Reporting to the Group Leader, you will be responsible for ensuring every vehicle meets McLaren’s uncompromising quality standards before progressing to the next stage of production. Working within a built‑in quality environment, you will utilise your expert paint and refinishing knowledge to identify, analyse, and rectify paint‑related concerns, ensuring flawless presentation across a wide range of bespoke colours, special finishes, and customer commissions. Your attention to detail, technical expertise, and commitment to excellence will directly contribute to the exceptional quality expected from the Ultimate Series programme.

What You’ll Do

  • Diagnose and resolve paint quality concerns identified within end‑of‑line quality stations, restoring vehicles to the required production and appearance standards.
  • Apply practical problem‑solving techniques and support 4M investigations (Man, Machine, Material, Method) to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Carry out high‑quality paint rectification and refinishing activities on premium vehicle surfaces, ensuring invisible repairs and exceptional finish quality.
  • Prepare vehicle surfaces through cleaning, sanding, polishing, de‑nibbing, and masking operations as required.
  • Mix and apply paints, clear coats, and specialist finishes accurately, ensuring precise colour matching across bespoke and heritage paint specifications.
  • Operate and maintain spray booth equipment and associated paint application systems to deliver consistently high‑quality results.
  • Inspect and evaluate paint surfaces using visual and technical assessment methods, ensuring all work meets McLaren, customer, and industry standards.
  • Work with complex paint systems including metallic, pearlescent, tri‑coat, tinted lacquer, exposed carbon fibre, and bespoke customer‑specified finishes.
  • Collaborate closely with Production, Quality, Engineering, and Paint Operations teams to support production targets while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality enhancement, waste reduction, and process efficiency.
  • Maintain exemplary housekeeping standards through adherence to 5S principles and workplace organisation requirements.
  • Ensure all PPE, equipment, and work practices comply with McLaren’ health, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Support training and mentoring of colleagues, sharing technical knowledge and promoting best practice throughout the team.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience within automotive paint application, refinishing, or paint rectification environments.
  • Strong understanding of paint processes, work instructions, and quality standards required to deliver a consistently exceptional product.
  • Extensive knowledge of surface preparation, paint mixing, colour matching, spray gun operation, and finishing techniques.
  • Experience working with premium, luxury, or high‑performance vehicle paint systems.
  • Ability to assess paint defects, determine root causes, and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety requirements, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and maintain high‑quality standards under pressure and to tight production deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a passion for craftsmanship and quality.
