Purpose of the Role

The Embedded Software Engineer will create the software that runs on racing cars in Formula 1, INDYCAR, and NASCAR. You will work on various McLaren technology stacks, delivering solutions in the high-pressure environment of global motorsport.

McLaren Applied develops electronics including world-leading ECUs that control these racing cars. The Embedded Software team develops low-level software that integrates with our model-based application code to bring these electronics to life.

Within the Control Applications Group, you will be responsible for developing solutions for specific systems and products. Your daily work will follow Agile methodologies, collaborating with Hardware, Application Development, Electronic Production, Track Support, and Analytics teams to develop and maintain embedded software.

Role Dimensions

Occasional travel may be required for track and factory support. Out-of-office hours work might be necessary depending on business needs.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Develop solutions across the full product lifecycle, aligned with business goals.
  • Innovate and demonstrate new technology within market constraints.
  • Deliver solutions following engineering processes for business benefits.
  • Develop software supporting the Electronic Production team in unit verification.
  • Maintain and support in-field products for customers.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics, Mathematics, Physics, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proficiency in C or C++ programming in embedded environments.
  • Experience developing software for microprocessors and microcontrollers.
  • Experience with RTOS software development (e.g., Integrity, FreeRTOS, RTEMS, VxWorks, Linux embedded).
  • Knowledge of communication interfaces like CAN, Ethernet, FlexRay, PCI, SPI, I2C, UART, USB.
  • Experience with full software development lifecycle using Agile and V-model methodologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills using engineering principles.
  • Ability to present at internal design reviews.

Desirable

  • Experience in automotive or motorsport environments.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, Perl, ANT.
  • Application development experience on Windows and Linux desktops.
  • Understanding of electronic hardware design and datasheets.
  • Ability to present at external design reviews.
  • Research skills to understand and implement new technical solutions.
  • Experience with model-driven tools like MATLAB Simulink.
  • Familiarity with FPGA development.
