Who You\’ll Work With
You will be based in one of our European office as part of McKinsey\’s Transformation Practice. There is flexibility in the location of this role (although ideally located within a major metropolitan area) with MT hiring for VPs focused on turnarounds and transformations in multiple offices globally.
MT is a unit of McKinsey, founded in 2010, that focuses exclusively on holistic transformations and corporate restructuring. We help clients drive rapid and dramatic performance improvement, plus provide a full suite of services to support companies facing liquidity issues or insolvency. To do so, we pair experienced professionals who are drawn from industry, private equity and the restructuring ecosystem with our firm’s global network of industry and functional experts. We are doers and we work closely with clients to execute the steps needed to achieve extraordinary performance improvements. With ~150 dedicated RTS consultants and ~250 generalist consultants among our global affiliates, we serve clients in more than 50 countries, many of which are among the largest impact situations for the firm globally.
MT has two service lines: Turnarounds & Transformations (T&T) and Corporate Restructuring (CR). While the CR service line focuses on leading complex corporate restructuring programs at companies facing acute performance issues, liquidity concerns, potential covenant violations and other issues that are destabilizing to the enterprise, the T&T service line focuses on driving rapid performance improvement for any business with significant performance improvement potential and an aspirational leader (ranging from distressed to “good to great” situations).
Your impact within our firm
You will serve clients with the MT “recipe” of leveraging a holistic, execution-centric approach, providing interim management and transformation leadership capabilities, and integrating the “best of the firm” (including other new ventures, plus sector and functional knowledge).
To achieve proven results, you will apply all levers, not only cost but also including revenue, strategy, organization and capital. Your client engagements will often span 12-24 months and they will include three phases: independent diligence phase (6-8 weeks), bottom up phase (6-8 weeks), and implementation (6-12+ months).
You’ll serve clients in an engagement manager (EM) role, helping these clients in their turnaround and transformation efforts. Specifically, you will operate as an EM for one or more of these phases and you will manage a team of consultants focused on a T&T engagement. By combining a strategic perspective with disciplined implementation, you will lead this team to identify the strategic, operational, organizational and financial levers that will deliver rapid and dramatic client impact. Throughout this process, you will apply the firm’s results-oriented and proprietary MT “recipe,” which is backed by tools, benchmarks and methodologies. You will be responsible for delivering the right transformation process, integrating it across multiple work streams, establishing the right mindset based on the latest performance and mobilizing the entire business to achieve and sustain value. You also will be responsible for ensuring that the team fully and properly leverages the capabilities of MT globally, across both of the MT service lines.
More broadly, you will be responsible for the overall execution and success of these large-scale turnarounds and transformations. You will leverage a broad range of leadership and influencing styles, ranging from respected “hard-edge” manager to motivational senior coach. You will display high energy and resilience in ambiguous and faced-paced contexts. Occasionally, you will play an interim management role for the client as well.
Your qualifications and skills
- Bachelor\’s degree; master\’s degree or MBA is preferred
- Experience working in professional service environments especially management consulting or investment banking is highly preferred
- Experience in managing teams of employees including analysts and/or associates specifically through an operational turnaround of significant step-change; direct operating experience with P&L accountability is highly preferred
- Expertise in driving rapid and successful operational turnarounds and/or rapid growth programs across key strategic, revenue, cost and working capital levers
- Robust understanding of financial and operational levers (e.g. business plan modeling, working capital management, financial statement analysis)
- Strong problem solving skills and stakeholder engagement
- Track record of consistently delivering high-impact results to meet clients’ needs
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in English as well as the local office language
