About The Role

We are seeking a Project / Design Engineer to lead the delivery of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle conversion projects from concept through to handover. The role combines engineering design, project management, regulatory compliance, manufacturing support and continuous improvement to ensure projects are delivered right first time, safely, efficiently and in line with relevant UK and EU requirements. This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone who enjoys taking ownership of technical projects, working closely with production teams and turning design ideas into practical, compliant vehicle conversion solutions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the full project lifecycle, including scoping, planning, design, delivery, testing, documentation and handover.
• Develop engineering designs using SolidWorks, applying design for manufacture and design for assembly principles.
• Create and maintain build manuals, technical drawings, work instructions, process maps (VSM/SIPOC) and supporting project/technical documentation and change control.
• Ensure all designs and conversions meet relevant VCA Type Approval requirements and applicable UK/EU vehicle regulations.
• Work closely with Sales, Procurement, Production, Stores and other internal stakeholders to ensure project requirements are understood and delivered.
• Define and support quality gates across goods-in, in-process and final inspection stages.
• Support supplier setup, technical specifications, quality standards and issue resolution.
• Maintain engineering governance, including bills of materials, ERP information, technical change control and design records.
• Lead root cause analysis and change management activities using recognised problem-solving tools such as 5 Whys, Ishikawa, etc.
• Identify and implement process improvements to improve quality, efficiency, safety and right-first-time delivery.
• Plan and support vehicle testing activity, including overseas testing where required.
• Deliver training, briefings and health and safety toolbox talks to relevant teams.
• Provide practical engineering support to production teams during build, trial, testing and handover stages.
• Ensure Health, Safety and Wellbeing processes and procedures are followed to safeguard yourself and your team.
• Support the training and development of team members to promote high standards and process improvements.
• Carry out other duties appropriate to the role and the needs of the organisation to support and maintain service delivery.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be a highly organised and practical Project / Design Engineer with strong technical design capability, sound manufacturing knowledge and the confidence to lead projects from concept through to delivery. They will combine hands-on engineering problem solving with excellent communication, stakeholder management and attention to detail, ensuring designs, documentation and project outcomes are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality and compliance standards.

Essential Criteria

• Degree in Engineering (Mechanical / Automotive or related) or equivalent qualification or currently working towards.
• Minimum of 4 years experience in a Project or Design Engineering role or similar technical role within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
• Strong SolidWorks capability and experience producing technical drawings, specifications and design documentation.
• Good understanding of manufacturing processes, including steelwork, fabrication, build sequencing and production support.
• Experience with vehicle regulations / type approval requirements (UK/EU).
• Ability to manage projects coordinate stakeholders, prioritise workloads and deliver to agreed timelines and standards.
• Strong problem-solving skills including experience using structured methods (5 Whys, Ishikawa, etc.)
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information clearly to teams.
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced environment.

Desirable Criteria

• Experience with Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), automotive or conversion.
• Electrical/ Wiring problem solving experience.
• Knowledge of VCA approval processes.
• Experience with ERP systems such as Unleashed.
• Lean / Continuous Improvement background.

• Hours of Work: 44 hours, Monday to Thursday 7.30am - 5.30pm and Friday 7.30am - 1.30pm.
• Salary Band: Negotiable on experience.
• Benenden Health available after successful completion of the 6-month probation period.
