The Principal Piping Designer directly impacts the effectiveness of their team and related teams. They exchange ideas and information relating to Piping Design effectively. The Principal Piping Designer may work autonomously within established Piping Design procedures and practices. They act as a lead, coordinating the work of others and proposing improvements to processes and methods within the Piping Design discipline.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Perform Design and Engineering process facilities within a specified time while adhering to maintenance, safety, and quality standards, considering constructability, economics, and operation during Pre-FEED, FEED, or Detailed Design phases.
- Develop 3D Models and ensure clash-free models in coordination with all other disciplines' requirements.
- Approve drawings including plot plans as per project specifications, McDermott Procedures, and Process Design practice.
- Complete assignments and facilitate the work activities of others.
- Set priorities, organise own work and time to meet objectives, and (as Lead Designer) forecast and plan resource requirements.
- Lead the design team to complete tasks within the planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, McDermott, and project-specific procedures.
- Act as project-based discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with Project Team, Client, vendor/supplier, and/or subcontractor counterparts.
- Ensure that the inter-discipline aspects of the design and deliverables are addressed.
- Support Lead Piping Engineer in measuring progress and productivity.
- Coordinate all activities within own discipline and discipline interfaces with other disciplines.
- Ensure effective communications among other disciplines and effective management of change.
- Coordinate 3D Model Reviews and ensure review comments are closed.
- Be fully familiar with the Project Scope of work, specifications, schedule, and inter-discipline requirements.
- Develop Plant Design and 3D Modelling, Drawings in accordance with work hours and schedule.
- Add input into the Plant Layout Narrative in accordance with the agreed Scope of work.
- Identify issues as soon as they arise and follow up with any required corrective action.
- Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications in the Change Management System.
- Assist the Lead Piping Engineer in raising technical queries, preparing the piping estimate and job scope changes when acting as Lead Designer.
- Attend project Kickoff, Review meetings, Vendor meetings, and model reviews.
- Monitor and coordinate the design team (remotely if required) when acting as Lead or area lead.
- Lead the project in a Multi Office Project Execution Environment (MOPEX) when acting as Lead or area lead.
- Support and supervise less-experienced members within the design team.
- Ensure that the work is carried out in accordance with McDermott requirements, Client and Statutory Design Codes, Standards, or Procedures with a particular focus on Health and Safety Policies.
- Support the Department Manager with the Designer's appraisals.
- Exercise judgment, based on previous experience, practices, and precedents, to identify and solve problems that arise with little or no precedent.
- Exchange ideas and information effectively and be direct when dealing with others.
Essential Qualifications and Education:
- 10 years minimum with major contractor or consultant, with 10+ years of experience in oil and gas performing Pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design.
- High School graduate with a diploma in Mechanical Design, or Drafting in a related discipline or equivalent experience.
- Detailed knowledge of 3D CAD systems including E3D or SP3D.
- Minimum 1 or 2 projects working experience in E3D and/or S3D.
- Detailed knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Auto lisp.
- Familiar with the associated local regulatory environment and international and national industry standards and specifications.
- Capable of leading projects.
- General understanding of how process equipment is maintained and operated.
- Programming, 3D Modeling, Menu, and/or Macro compilation skills would be an advantage.
- Flexible for business travelling/assignments.
- Knowledge of QA Systems and a good communicator.
