About the role.
At Scarborough, we're looking for someone who goes beyond compliance - someone who can shape culture, influence leaders, and inspire teams they don't directly manage. Of course, safety is non-negotiable. We are always Safety First. For Us, For Family.
So much so, we've built our own internal safety brand - because making sure every colleague goes home safely to their family and friends isn't just a priority, it's part of who we are. But this role? It's bigger than that. This is about setting the bar - not just for Scarborough, but for the wider business. It's about embedding a safety mindset so deeply that it becomes instinctive. Lived. Breathed. Owned by everyone.
What you'll be doing.
You'll sit at the heart of the site leadership team, influencing thinking, challenging norms, and driving a culture where safety isn't driven by process... but by people. Because here, HSE isn't a function. It's a culture. And for the right person, this is more than a role - it's a genuine opportunity to grow your career, with a pathway towards future Director-level appointments.
You will be able to:
- Influence and coach leaders to take true ownership of safety
- Build belief and accountability across teams you don't directly lead
- Turn strategy into everyday behaviours on the ground
- Create momentum - where safety is continuously improving, not standing still
- Flex your leadership style to get the best out of our teams and processes
You will be accountable for:
- Driving safe working practices and ensuring full legal compliance
- Shaping HSE strategy and influencing policy development
- Leading risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Embedding HSE standards through daily site presence and coaching
- Delivering impactful training and inductions
- Investigating incidents to identify root causes and prevent recurrence
- Leading audits, inspections, and compliance reporting
- Owning ISO 45001 & 14001 systems and audit plans
- Partnering with SLT, HR and Occupational Health on key issues
- Driving continuous improvement through data, insights and scorecards
- Leading emergency preparedness and environmental compliance
What you'll need to be successful.
- NEBOSH General Certificate & National Diploma (essential)
- Environmental qualification (essential)
- Experience within a senior HSE role in manufacturing (7-10 years)
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 (essential) and ISO 14001 (desirable)
- An engineering background and familiarity working within manufacturing environments
- Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills
- An adaptable mindset, an appreciation of the need to adjust your style when the need arises
- Experience in food manufacturing, HACCP or DuPont methodologies (desirable)
About the team.
You'll be based at our Scarborough plant in North Yorkshire. We opened this plant back in the swinging sixties, but it's definitely not stuck in the past. It's one of the largest French fry factories in the world and after a recent development, it's also one of the most high tech. Our team of over 300 colleagues work hard to make sure the quality of our products keep our customers returning for more, for now and years to come!
The Benefits
Although we do encourage you to taste the goods you'll be pleased to know we don't pay you in 'chips'. For working hard, you'll also get a great salary and some pretty good benefits including:
- An achievable yearly bonus based on personal performance.
- An excellent pension where we will pay double what you do, up to a maximum of 12% of your pay
- Flexible holidays - where you can buy & sell up to 5 days holiday per year
- Optional health cash plan
- Cycle to work scheme
- 'Chips In' Volunteering Day Off - to make a positive impact to the competitiveness, resilience, and long-term development of McCain communities across the globe
