An exciting new opportunity has become available within the Industrial Planning & Capability (IPC) area for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer to join the team. This position will be responsible for providing the Manufacturing Engineering focus and skill set within the IPC Team, representing the department at various forums, engaging with key stakeholders across the business, and promoting the department.
Salary: Circa £49,000 depending on experience
Dynamic (hybrid) working: 3-4 days per week on-site due to workload classification
Security Clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship. Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. As a minimum and after offer stage, all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS), which are managed by the MBDA Personnel Security Team.

The opportunity:
In this role, you will support the continued growth of an essential team within Manufacturing Business Management and will enable an individual to grow their knowledge across all areas of manufacturing whilst operating at a strategic level within the organisation. The function of IPC is to review future demand to ensure that appropriate industrial planning and investments are completed so that MBDA can deliver against its commitments and to also develop IPC as a functional capability with effective tools and processes.
You will lead the generation of IPC assessments that support manufacturing bids as well as scenario assessments. You will also work on the development of manufacturing capacity modelling across all business units and sites. The role will expand to support activities such as value stream mapping across the UK manufacturing systems, defining the process and governance around capacity modelling, supporting new business bids and future demand assessments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing manufacturing systems and processes in response to the defined Manufacturing Architecture and the Manufacturing, Inspection and Test Plan.
- Creation and approval of manufacturing and test instruction documentation.
- Process FMEA and process capability proving.
- Managing and reporting against own work programmes, including analysis of risk, to ensure work is delivered against accountabilities.
- Leading and supporting Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing initiatives (e.g., Value Stream Mapping & Line Balancing) to ensure the area of responsibility is continually developing to improve efficiency.
- Creation and maintenance of manufacturing system capacity models.
- Supporting the Industrial Planning & Capability Manager and the Manufacturing Engineering Managers during the preparation and proving of the Production System for IVM (Initial Validation of Manufacture) and VMS (Validated Manufacturing System) approval.
- Risk identification and aversion strategies associated with technical definition and manufacturing methodologies.
- Development, maintenance and control of technical interfaces to customers, suppliers and collaborators to ensure effective and swift resolution of technical issues.
- Effective Non-Conformance management and corrective action.
What we're looking for from you:
- Formal technical Engineering/Craft Apprenticeship to NVQ Level 3 and Formal further education certificate to HNC or equivalent in a relevant subject.
- Degree in relevant Engineering subject.
- Able to work with minimum supervision.
- Experience in engineering leadership/management.
- Experience in CI & Lean Manufacturing activities and tools.
- Good Planning and Organising skills to ensure multiple tasks are prioritised and monitored to deliver set objectives.
- Negotiating and influencing skills.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
