An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and self‑driven Safety, Health & Environmental Advisor to join the MBDA team at our Bolton site. If you are passionate about safety, health and reducing our impact on the environment, this challenging but rewarding position may be for you.
Salary: Circa £37,000 depending on experience.
Working: Hybrid; a minimum of three days per week onsite at the Bolton site.
Security clearance: British Citizen or a Dual UK national with British citizenship. Restrictions and/or limitations relating to nationality and/or rights to work may apply. As a minimum and after the offer stage all successful candidates will need to undergo HMG Basic Personnel Security Standard checks (BPSS).
Key Responsibilities
- Operational (“Boots on the Ground”) Safety Support
- Maintain a visible presence across logistics, manufacturing areas, test facilities, laboratories and engineering.
- Support routine SHE inspections.
- Support Team Leaders in developing and reviewing task‑based risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Provide real‑time advice during non‑routine tasks, breakdowns, maintenance activities and contractor works.
- Challenge unsafe behaviours in a constructive and professional manner.
- Support emergency exercises and drills.
- Monitor high‑risk activities such as lifting operations (LOLER), hazardous substances (COSHH/DSEAR), confined spaces, hot works, explosive or energetics‑related activities (where applicable).
- SHE Administration & Governance
- Maintain SHE documentation in line with ISO45001 and ISO14001 management systems.
- Administer incident reporting systems and ensure accurate record keeping.
- Track and monitor corrective and preventive actions to closure.
- Support preparation of monthly SHE reports and KPI dashboards.
- Manage document control for risk assessments, procedures and policies.
- Coordinate audit schedules and maintain audit records.
- Support internal and external audit preparation, including evidence collation.
- Maintain statutory inspection records (e.g. lifting equipment registers, LEV, Thorough Examination and Test records etc.).
- Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Lead or support investigations into accidents, near misses and environmental incidents.
- Apply structured root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys).
- Produce clear, factual investigation reports for internal governance and external stakeholders.
- Support RIDDOR reporting submissions.
- Analyse incident trends and recommend preventative measures.
- Regulatory & Defence Compliance
- Ensure compliance with UK legislation including Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, COSHH, PUWER, LOLER, CDM, Environmental Protection Act.
- Assist with security‑controlled document handling where required.
- Liaise with enforcing authorities (HSE, Environment Agency) when necessary.
- Environmental & Sustainability
- Monitor waste streams, hazardous waste controls and spill prevention measures.
- Support environmental inspections and permit compliance.
- Maintain environmental registers and aspects/impacts documentation.
- Assist with sustainability reporting and improvement initiatives.
- Culture & Engagement
- Deliver toolbox talks, safety alerts and briefings.
- Support induction training for new starters and contractors.
- Act as a point of contact for employee safety concerns.
- Promote near‑miss reporting and positive intervention culture.
- Support behavioural safety initiatives and human factors integration.
Qualifications
NEBOSH General Certificate as a minimum (ideally working towards or willing to work towards Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice).
