We are an accounting-tech startup building automation and AI to eliminate the tedious manual spreadsheet-based work that haunts in-house finance teams every single month. We serve the mid-market end of SMB: in-house finance teams of 2–10 people. Our mission is to mend month end and enable real-time accounting.
We recently passed £1m ARR and are growing fast after four years in market, doubling our revenue in 2025. We are in a phenomenal position as category leaders — evidenced by our strategic partnership with Xero and winning Xero's Global People's Choice Award, ahead of 1,200+ connected solutions. Our team spans the UK, Australia and South Africa, with the UK and Australia as our largest markets and North America now opened up as a growth focus.
We are founded by experienced entrepreneurs in David Tuck (ex-CFO and founder of Chaser) and James Scott-Griffin (former CTO at Idio/Optimizely and Rungway). Backed by elite investors, we are doubling the team to 24 as we accelerate the next phase of growth.
About Mayday: Mayday is headquartered in the UK, and this role is open to candidates in the UK, preferably in or close to London.
The Role: You will report directly to the CPTO and work alongside the whole business to deliver next-generation accounting technology. Since our product is deep accounting tech, familiarity with accounting is a bonus, and at a minimum you are willing to learn its concepts and processes. All employees are supported in their personal development with both time and budget, so we will help you gain the knowledge you need.
Since Mayday is a startup, you will be required to wear multiple hats and be comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes unpredictable environment. As a small team, your contributions will be significant and highly visible. You will be asked to find pragmatic solutions which allow us to test product hypotheses rapidly, and once they are proven, build scalable, dependable, and well-tested product for our customers to use.
Our backend tech stack is Spring Boot with Java/Kotlin/Groovy, MySQL and Opensearch, hosted on AWS. Ideally, you are an expert in at least one of those tools, but it is ok if you aren’t - we are looking for great people, so your experience is more valuable than the specifics. Our frontend is React with Typescript, and you will be expected to contribute small features to the frontend (though the role is at least 95% backend). We also have an app built in Ruby on Rails, and experience with this stack will be a big plus.
About You: You are an experienced engineer with multiple years of working in startups as a backend engineer; you have a strong, pragmatic problem-solving mindset; you are comfortable working both collaboratively and on your own as location and task requires.
The Details:
- Salary is up to £75k depending on experience
- Share options from day 1
- 25 days' paid holiday, plus public holidays
- Personal learning and development budget
- 1 day a week in person in Central London (likely more during onboarding)
