My client is looking to bring in a Director of Payroll to bridge the gap between their employment tax consultancy expertise and the associated payroll deliverables (i.e., how are tax changes implemented by clients from a practical, operational perspective). The ability to potentially lead and transform their existing UK payroll offering would also be desirable.

Core competencies

  1. People: experience of recruiting and developing key team members.
  2. Clients: examples of high client satisfaction feedback and a reputation for delivery.
  3. Operations: ability to run their portfolio effectively – good margin, timely billing and payment of fees.
  4. Markets: Ability to build a portfolio based on expertise and external network.

Specific expertise

An understanding of the payroll practicalities associated with the following common issues is expected:

  • Parental leave
  • Shadow payroll issues (equity payments, expat payrolls)
  • National Minimum Wage compliance
  • Off payroll workers / requirements for those inside IR35
  • Salary Sacrifice – including auto enrolment / pension advice

Route to market

The ability to:

  • lead on the payrolling of benefits as a firm proposition.
  • assist clients with payroll transformation – vendor selection – RFP, vendor demonstrations, references etc.
  • assist clients with payroll health checks – Review of processes, data collection, outputs via sample testing.
  • help clients with strategy – technology, process optimisation, employee experience.
  • partner with the tax team on our National Minimum Wage proposition.
  • lead on HMRC disclosures where failures identified.

Potential scope to transform our existing payroll proposition

Experience of running UK payroll delivery teams also desirable (winning clients, managing engagements etc.), to facilitate leading on the transformation of their payroll delivery service, which would include reviewing and implementing their go to market strategy.
