The role is based in the specialist Dispute Consultancy’s Glasgow office with an opportunity to work within a specialist construction Quantum Claims team. Your role will focus on construction claims management within a broader construction claims division. You will be a part of the team which works on construction claims nationally in the UK and internationally. Reporting to nationally recognized Claims and Disputes Experts will help you acquire guidance, training, and professional development in abundance. The work will be based from the Company’s Glasgow office. Projects include a range of civil and building projects located in the UK and a range of expert service assignments based in international locations.
In Building construction projects, the quantum claims resolution work will be majorly related to retail and health projects. In Civil Engineering Construction claims work will majorly be focused on rail, infrastructure construction, and upgrade work for roads and utilities/water projects. A short-term international travel for high-level meetings with clients and projects may be necessary for large building or civil engineering quantum claims assignments.
Responsibilities and Duties
- The candidate will have to join an expert construction claims team or run a construction claims team working on a particular client claims project.
- Presentation of methodical, thorough, and detailed research findings to colleagues, lawyers, and senior client representatives with natural gravitas orally and in written format to establish facts relevant to all stages of the construction process.
- Candidates will be required to have built up significant technical knowledge in a relevant role such as a quantity surveyor or commercial manager.
- Provide claims consultancy advice on live contracts and projects in distress to a high professional standard supported in a structured manner by clear cross-referencing to the relevant documents analysed.
- The ability to engage with confidence with solicitors and clients.
- Ability to take on board, and react positively to, constructive criticism.
- The candidate should be driven and passionate about developing their skills and delivering a high standard of work.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Candidate should have 4 – 10 years or equivalent of experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Cost Manager.
- Strong and transferrable experience of working as a contractor's Project Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor is preferred, with reference to having worked on claims matters arising because of having managed a significantly sized contract like JCT and NEC from commencement to final account, and with responsibility for managing the claims preparation process throughout the duration and completion of contracted works.
- The candidate should have experience in working with a claims construction team or managing a construction claims team on a client claims assignment.
- Experience of presenting the construction claims strategy to be adopted as well as demonstrating command of the detail of the claim, both orally and in written form to colleagues, lawyers, and senior client representatives with natural gravitas.
- Able to offer advice on a range of national and international construction contract forms to clients and the process and procedures relating to them that are available to pursue or rebut a claim.
- Experience and ability to work alone to provide claims consultancy advice on live contracts and projects in distress to the highest professional standard without supervision and to collaborate to complete complex tasks under tight time deadlines.
- Able to deploy a broad range of prior experience from a variety of construction sectors to the construction claim issues under consideration.
Qualifications/Educational Requirements
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering or Cost Management is preferred.
- MSc or LLM in Construction law is desirable.
