Specialist in Elderly Medicine (fixed term NHS position)
Full time Northampton General Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic and forward thinking specialist in Geriatric Medicine to join and help develop the successful service that the Trust provides. This is an exciting opportunity for the new team member to join our well located DGH at a time when the department is changing practice throughout the hospital. We are looking to develop new areas of working so candidates with special interests will be accommodated and supported as much as possible.

Role and Team
This is for a new full time appointment to join the existing team of seven full time geriatricians and one locum geriatrician (Orthogeriatrics/Parkinson disease and General geriatrics). We are establishing a service for frail elderly patients on the Emergency Medical assessment unit. The current service includes three Specialist Nurses for Elderly Medicine who perform Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment within 24 hours of admission, supported by sessions from a trust grade Registrar and a consultant Geriatrician. They identify suitable patients for multidisciplinary team assessment on two admission units to enable prompt and safe discharges and identify appropriate patients for 1 short stay elderly wards managed by Geriatricians.
Main duties
Duties & Responsibilities of Clinical Role
- Participate in the future development of Elderly medicine services for the Trust with emphasis on the development of the front end frailty pathway.
- Provide input into medical student education for Leicester undergraduates on diagnosis and management of medical emergencies.
- Support and provide teaching and training of junior medical staff, postgraduate training and nurse training on the unit.
- Participate in the Department of Medicine meetings and have a representative on the Directorate management Board.
- Ensure good practice by regular audit and review of incidents with the clinical team and take forward lessons learnt.
- Link with the directorate clinical governance meetings and contribute to lessons learnt from incidents and complaints.
- Link with all acute physicians involved in the admission of elderly patients and with the consultant Psycho-geriatrician who is a CECS member.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential- Educated to Specialty degree; qualification UK or local.
- Experience in geriatric medicine in the UK.
- Minimum of 12 years' medical work since primary medical qualification, with at least six years in a relevant specialty; includes Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent 6 years' experience from other medical grades including overseas may be accepted.
- MD, PhD or other higher degree.
- MRCP & SCE or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills and Personal Qualities
Essential- Experience of Audit.
- Experience of Teaching Junior Staff.
- Demonstrable team leadership skills and experience.
- Full registration with General Medical Council.
- High level of organizational skills and strong communication abilities.

- Research projects related to specialty; dedication to clinical geriatric medicine.
