- 30 hours per week - part-time (hours worked on a day shift basis 8am-8pm, Monday to Sunday)
The Breast Imaging Department at Northampton General Hospital (NGH) is extending core working hours/days to meet service demand. This change requires recruiting a Mammographer Radiographer/Radiographer due to internal promotion.
Responsibilities:
- Work as a trained mammographer (or trainee mammographer) within the Breast Screening Unit, performing mammograms in line with the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and providing a diagnostic service to the breast symptomatic surgical pathway.
- Involve in Family History screening, assessment, follow-up and symptomatic mammography; assist in stereo-tactic and US interventional procedures.
- Provide holistic, compassionate and empathetic care to service users/patients; support them across pathways to ensure quality care.
- Collaborate with other specialties; demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Be a proactive team member; take responsibility when needed and adopt a flexible approach to department needs.
- Supervise and train trainee mammographers and Assistant/Associate Practitioners.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with National Quality Assurance Standards and IR(ME)R regulations.
- Assist in training and development; attend departmental meetings where possible; participate in departmental audits and service improvement initiatives.
- Perform daily/weekly/monthly QA on digital mammography and ultrasound equipment per local QA procedure; inform QA Lead if parameters are out of range and know when to suspend screening.
- Daily maintenance and cleaning of equipment; report faults to the Superintendent Radiographer.
- Input and interpret QA data; proficient use of CRIS and QA data packages (e.g., Excel).
- Know local protocols for Right Results reporting; ensure paperwork is correctly completed.
- Maintain professional standards and participate in CPD; work within Quality Management System protocols.
- Attend multi-disciplinary meetings when possible; support administration within the unit.
- Supervise movement of the articulated mobile screening unit and supervise outside contractors.
- Perform mammography on women from symptomatic clinics and those attending special needs clinics; manage consent and discuss possible outcomes with carers where appropriate.
- Image breast specimens; work solo in radiographer-led breast cancer follow-up and family history clinics.
- Know and work within regulations governing IR(ME)R, Radiation Protection, COSHH, Health and Safety, Fire, and Data Protection.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications:
- UK postgraduate qualification in mammography for Band 6; or a radiographer who wishes to specialise in mammography and undertake the relevant training (Band 5).
- The role will rise to Band 6 following successful completion of training and proof of competence.
- Experience in mammography and familiarity with NHSBSP requirements preferred.
