Job Summary

This opportunity is open to candidates with specialty interests in gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, renal medicine, cardiology, elderly care & stroke medicine in addition to contribution to acute medical care.

Our acute medical service will be based in the Emergency Department mediated by two Medical Consultants 8:30‑9:30 pm followed by half days. There are four blocks per quarter (each block: two long days and two half days). Your job plan can be designed around a specialty interest as we hope to have a diverse and dynamic team to help achieve excellent and comprehensive patient care. The job plan will involve working prospectively and it is expected that the post‑holder will be flexible in terms of working hours within the agreed contract.

The Consultant will work on site at NGH for now, however there are opportunities in future to work cross sites (KGH).

Main Duties

A formal job plan will be mutually agreed between the appointee and the Clinical Lead on behalf of the Medical Director within three months of commencement. The initial plan will be based on a provisional timetable and will cover work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments both internal and external, and include personal objectives linked to wider service goals, along with the support required to fulfil the plan.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Relevant specialty degree qualification
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Completion of Specialty Training (CCT or equivalent) or within 6 months of achieving CCT in relevant specialty. If included in the GMC Specialist Register, Specialist List in a specialty other than general or acute medicine, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience.

Desirable

  • MD, PhD or other higher degree
  • Intermediate Level Training in Intensive Care

Teaching – Essential

  • Ability to teach clinical and generic skills
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and organisational problems
