Consultant Cellular Pathologist – Shape the Future of Diagnostics in a Dynamic, Modern Department at Northampton General Hospital (NGH).
Role: Consultant Cellular Pathologist
Location: Northampton General Hospital, Cliftonville, Northampton NN1 5BD, United Kingdom
Note: This is a replacement post, offered initially at 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with potential for up to 2 additional PAs. The role includes reporting, grossing, MDT leadership, and teaching responsibilities.
What You\’ll Need
- FRCPath (UK) or an equivalent qualification
- Full GMC Specialist Registration or be within 6 months of obtaining your CCT at time of interview

- A large and varied diagnostic workload serving NGH, the Northamptonshire Cancer Centre, Primary Care, and regional partnerships with Leicester and Kettering hospitals

- Leading roles in local and regional multidisciplinary cancer team meetings (MDTs) – mostly held virtually via MS Teams
- Involvement in the autopsy service (subject to HM Coroner approval)
- Modern, lean-focused department with state-of-the-art facilities, working towards digital dictation / voice recognition and Digital Histopathology
Main duties
- Deliver a comprehensive Cellular Pathology diagnostic service, including specimen cut-up, reporting, frozen sections, and participation in daily workload allocation
- Provide clinical leadership in MDT meetings, audit, governance, and strategy development across the Trust and wider Group
- Participate in and provide internal cross-cover, including potential involvement in the autopsy service (subject to HM Coroner approval)
- Ensure compliance with UKAS accreditation, NEQAS programmes, and Trust clinical governance standards
- Support teaching and supervision of medical students, trainees, and scientific staff, including involvement in education programmes and clinical training
- Contribute to service development, planning, and innovation, including assessing new methods and supporting external service-level agreements
- Attend departmental and service line meetings, contribute to management tasks, and monitor service performance and quality indicators
- Uphold high standards of data management and confidentiality, ensuring compliance with Data Protection and Freedom of Information regulations
