Mavis Technologies designs and manufactures AI-powered smart glasses that help blind and visually impaired people read, recognise their surroundings and live more independently. We build our products in our own facility at Vulcan Works, Northampton, and we’re now bringing injection moulding in-house.
We’re looking for a hands‑on engineer to lead the move of our plastic parts production in-house and take ownership of how our glasses are made. You’ll set up and run our injection moulding machine, design and refine moulds, oversee 3D printing and vacuum‑cast parts, and work alongside our production technician on assembly. This is a practical, varied role in a small team.
What you’ll do:
- Commission and set up our in‑house injection moulding machine
- Design, or work with toolmakers on, mould tools for our frames and components
- Run mould trials, set process parameters and solve moulding defects (short shots, sink, flash, warpage)
- Manage materials, drying and machine maintenance
- Build safe, repeatable production processes and work instructions
- Oversee SLA 3D printing for prototypes, jigs and production parts
- Manage outsourced vacuum‑cast frames: quality checks, supplier liaison and the eventual transition to moulded parts
- Design jigs and fixtures to make assembly faster and more consistent
- Take part in hands‑on assembly of the smart glasses alongside our production technician
- Lead day‑to‑day production planning and guide production staff
- Carry out inspection and first‑article checks, and help improve yield and build quality
What we’re looking for:
- Hands‑on experience running and setting injection moulding machines
- Experience with mould design or close work with toolmakers
- Practical 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks / Fusion 360)
- Good understanding of plastics, tolerances and quality inspection
- Happy to get involved in assembly and day‑to‑day production, not just engineering
- Organised and able to guide others and keep production moving
- An engineering qualification (degree, HND, apprenticeship) or equivalent industry experience
Nice to have:
- Experience setting up moulding in a new or small facility
- SLA 3D printing or vacuum casting experience
- Consumer electronics, wearables or medical device background
- Knowledge of machine safety (PUWER) and quality systems such as ISO 9001 / ISO 13485
What we offer:
- £21,000–£35,000 (Full-time or Part-time) depending on experience
- Flexibility to increase days during busy production or tooling phases, by mutual agreement
- Holiday
- The chance to build our in‑house manufacturing from the ground up and see products you make reach the people who rely on them
Location: On-site at Vulcan Works, Northampton. You must have the right to work in the UK.
