Interim CFO / Finance Director – International NGO
£500–£650 per day | Fully Remote | 3–4 Days per Week | Immediate Start
Initial 3-month contract with potential for extension
Matter Talent is supporting an international humanitarian organisation in the appointment of an experienced Interim CFO / Finance Director.
This is an urgent requirement following an unexpected absence within the senior finance function. The organisation is seeking an experienced, hands‑on finance leader who can quickly establish stability, provide supportive leadership to an international finance team and ensure business continuity.
The organisation operates internationally, with a remote finance team based across Africa and the Middle East.
The Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Interim CFO will take responsibility for both the strategic and operational management of the finance function.
The immediate focus will be on stabilising the finance function, supporting the existing team and ensuring effective financial management during a period of transition.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and supporting a remote finance team of four across multiple countries.
- Ensuring continuity of cash flow management, payments, financial reporting and controls.
- Overseeing budgeting, donor funding, grant reporting and financial compliance.
- Supporting the organisation through its financial audit.
- Managing international finance operations, including treasury, foreign exchange and multi-currency transactions.
- Reviewing existing financial processes and overseeing an ongoing ERP implementation.
- Providing financial guidance, reporting and support to the CEO, senior leadership team and Board.
- Identifying financial and operational risks and recommending practical improvements.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Interim CFO, Finance Director or senior finance professional with the ability to hit the ground running.
Ideally, you will offer:
- Significant experience operating at CFO / Finance Director level.
- Previous experience within an NGO, international charity or not-for-profit organisation.
- Strong understanding of grant funding, donor reporting and financial compliance.
- Experience overseeing international finance operations and multi-currency transactions.
- Strong financial controls, audit and cash flow management experience.
- Previous experience leading remote and internationally dispersed teams.
- Experience of ERP implementations or finance systems improvements.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with a pragmatic, supportive and hands‑on approach.
Experience working with institutional donors such as FCDO, ECHO or USAID would be particularly advantageous.
Above all, we are looking for someone who can bring stability, build trust with an existing team and provide confident financial leadership.
- Location: Fully remote, ideally UK or Europe-based.
- Commitment: 3–4 days per week.
- Duration: Initial 3-month contract, with potential for extension.
- Start: ASAP, ideally before November.
- Travel: Occasional travel to the Netherlands, including a potential Board meeting in late November.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced interim finance leader to make a meaningful contribution within a purpose-driven international organisation.
