Technical Director – Environment & Sustainability

An established environmental consultancy is looking to appoint a Technical Director or Associate Director specialising in Climate Change and Sustainability to support the continued development of its team, based in any office across the UK (London, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, West Sussex, Bristol).

The business works across a broad range of development, infrastructure and regeneration projects, providing specialist environmental advice to developers, planners and engineering teams. With a growing portfolio of work in carbon management, climate change and sustainability, this is an opportunity for an experienced consultant to take on a senior position combining technical delivery, client management and team development.

The Opportunity

You'll play a leading role in the delivery of carbon and climate change assessments, with a particular focus on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the planning process. The position will involve advising on the environmental implications of major development and infrastructure schemes, helping clients understand carbon emissions, assess climate-related risks and meet relevant planning requirements.

Alongside project delivery, you'll contribute to the development of the wider service offering, build client relationships and support the continued growth of the team.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead carbon and climate change assessments for development and infrastructure projects.
  • Manage climate change and greenhouse gas assessments undertaken as part of EIA.
  • Prepare and review Environmental Statement chapters and supporting technical reports.
  • Assess climate-related risks, resilience and adaptation requirements.
  • Provide advice on carbon reduction, Net Zero and wider sustainability objectives.
  • Interpret relevant planning policy, environmental legislation and technical guidance.
  • Manage project delivery, budgets, technical quality and client relationships.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring and support to colleagues.
  • Contribute to bids, tenders and business development opportunities.
  • Identify opportunities to develop services and strengthen client relationships.

Project Experience

The role offers exposure to a varied portfolio of environmental and sustainability work, including:

  • Carbon emissions and greenhouse gas assessments.
  • EIA and Environmental Statement preparation.
  • Climate change impact and risk assessments.
  • Major development and infrastructure schemes.
  • Climate adaptation and resilience planning.
  • Net Zero strategies and decarbonisation plans.
  • Corporate carbon management and sustainability advice.
  • Whole life carbon and embodied carbon assessments.
  • Circular economy and resource efficiency assessments.
  • Environmental policy and planning-related advisory work.

What They're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant experience in environmental, climate change, carbon or sustainability consultancy.
  • A strong track record of delivering or overseeing climate change and carbon assessments within EIA.
  • Experience preparing, reviewing or contributing to Environmental Statement chapters.
  • A sound understanding of UK planning policy and environmental assessment requirements.
  • Experience managing projects, budgets and client relationships.
  • Strong technical report writing and quality assurance skills.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues or managing technical teams.
  • Commercial awareness and involvement in bids, tenders or business development.
  • The ability to communicate technical information clearly to clients and stakeholders.

Why Consider This Role?

  • Work on a varied portfolio of development and infrastructure projects.
  • Take ownership of technically challenging environmental assessments.
  • Combine hands-on technical work with client engagement and team leadership.
  • Contribute to the development of an expanding consultancy service.
  • Play a key role in business growth and longer-term strategic direction.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for continued professional development and career progression.
