About Matter

Matter is a VC‑backed Cleantech scale‑up focused on pioneering water filtration technology to capture microplastics and reduce carbon emissions. As a Junior Mechanical Engineer, you will work across the full product lifecycle, applying academic knowledge to real‑world challenges.

The Opportunity

You will support design, development, prototyping, testing, and installation of mechanical systems and components. You will use CAD tools, 3D printing, workshop and laboratory equipment, and engage with local and international supply chains.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver assigned mechanical engineering work packages with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Produce and maintain engineering documentation: CAD models, drawings, test records, reports.
  • Support design and development of mechanical components and sub‑systems from concept to final product.
  • Build, assemble and maintain functional prototypes and full‑scale industrial products using workshop tools.
  • Conduct mechanical testing, develop new test methods, and analyse data to drive design improvements.
  • Keep stakeholders updated on progress and produce clear technical reports.
  • Support presentations of technical work to clients and external stakeholders.

About You

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Problem‑solving using first principles, calculations, spreadsheets, and basic simulation tools.
  • Foundational understanding of mechanics, materials, and basic fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with CAD software: parts, assemblies, tolerances, fits.
  • Practical skills with hand and power tools for prototype fabrication.
  • Ability to collect, process, and communicate test data in written reports.
  • Confidence presenting ideas to colleagues and, with support, to clients.
  • Exposure to mechanical testing or test method development.
  • Awareness of BOMs, functional requirements, risk assessments (e.g., FMEA).
  • Understanding of design for manufacture principles.
  • Familiarity with simple FEA/CFD or other simulation tools from university projects or early experience.
  • Interest in system‑level mechanical design and product delivery.
  • Flexible working – core 09:30–16:00. Hybrid available; based at Central Bristol HQ.
