About us
Matrix Renewables is a renewable energy platform that was founded by global alternative asset manager TPG through its impact investing platform in 2020. Headquartered in Madrid, Matrix Renewables focuses on developing, constructing and being long-term owners of renewable energy assets. Matrix Renewables’ current portfolio is comprised of 15.7 GW (operational, under construction, ready to build, under development) of renewable energy projects and storage across North America, Europe and Latin America.
The Role
At Matrix Renewables we are seeking an experienced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Associate to join our growing Energy Storage team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the technical, analytical, and operational aspects of BESS projects — from early-stage feasibility and modelling to commissioning and performance optimization. You will work closely with project developers, engineers, and financial analysts to evaluate and implement cutting-edge battery storage and energy solutions supporting the energy transition to a low-carbon energy system. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to be involved in the full setup of a company, work in an international, fast-paced environment, and contribute to the renewable energy sector.
Key activities and responsibilities:
- Technical & Analytical
- Develop and maintain battery system models (electrical, thermal, and economic).
- Conduct performance simulations, degradation analysis, and techno-economic assessments for utility-scale projects.
- Evaluate different battery chemistries and configurations and advise on system design.
- Support grid connection studies, dynamic modelling, and integration with renewable generation assets (solar, wind).
- Work with different and innovative technologies related to renewables and energy storage.
- Oversee and coordinate system commissioning and acceptance testing.
- Validate performance data and ensure systems meet functional and safety standards (G99, IEC, IEEE).
- Liaise with EPC contractors, OEMs, and integrators to resolve technical issues during installation and start-up.
- Support root-cause analysis and optimization of operational BESS assets.
- Provide technical input into investment cases, RFPs, and due diligence processes.
- Work with commercial teams to optimize revenue streams across energy trading, frequency response, and capacity markets.
- Track technology trends and supplier developments in the global BESS sector.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and best practices for BESS deployment.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Physics, or related field.
- 3–7+ years of professional experience in battery energy storage systems (design, modelling, or commissioning).
- Proven ability to model and analyse BESS performance using simulation and data analytics tools.
- Experience with battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), and control strategies.
- Strong understanding of grid codes (G99/G100) and connection processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable:
- Knowledge in new technologies, green hydrogen, interconnections, etc.
- Experience with SCADA systems, EMS software, or real-time monitoring platforms.
- Knowledge of Python / MATLAB / PowerFactory / PSCAD / DIgSILENT.
- Familiarity with lifecycle cost analysis and asset performance benchmarking.
Key Competencies
- Analytical and detail-oriented mindset.
- Strong problem-solving and data interpretation skills.
- Proactive and collaborative working style.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
