- Role
- At Matrix Renewables we are seeking an experienced
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Associate to join our growing Energy Storage team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the technical, analytical, and operational aspects of BESS projects — from early-stage feasibility and modelling to commissioning and performance optimization.
You will work closely with project developers, engineers, and financial analysts to evaluate and implement cutting-edge battery storage and energy solutions supporting the energy transition to a low-carbon energy system.

Key activities and responsibilities
- Technical & Analytical
- Develop and maintain battery system models
(electrical, thermal, and economic).
- Conduct performance simulations, degradation analysis, and techno-economic assessments for utility-scale projects.
- Evaluate different battery chemistries and configurations and advise on system design
- Support grid connection studies , dynamic modelling, and integration with renewable generation assets (solar, wind).
- Work with different and innovative technologies related to renewables and energy storage
- Oversee and coordinate system commissioning and acceptance testing .
- Validate performance data and ensure systems meet functional and safety standards
(G99, IEC, IEEE).
- Liaise with EPC contractors, OEMs, and integrators to resolve technical issues during installation and start-up.
- Support root-cause analysis and optimization of operational BESS assets.
- Commercial & Strategic
- Provide technical input into investment cases , RFPs, and due diligence processes.
- Work with commercial teams to optimize revenue streams across energy trading, frequency response, and capacity markets .
- Track technology trends and supplier developments in the global BESS sector.
- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and best practices for BESS deployment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in
Electrical or Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Physics, or related field .
3–7+ years of professional experience in battery energy storage systems (design, modelling, or commissioning).
- Proven ability to model and analyse BESS performance using simulation and data analytics tools.
- Experience with battery management systems (BMS) , power conversion systems (PCS), and control strategies.
- Strong understanding of grid codes (G99/G100) and connection processes .
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience with
SCADA systems, EMS software , or real-time monitoring platforms.
- Knowledge of
Python / MATLAB / Power Factory / PSCAD / DIg SILENT .
- Familiarity with lifecycle cost analysis and asset performance benchmarking .
- Analytical and detail-oriented mindset.
- Strong problem-solving and data interpretation skills.
- Proactive and collaborative working style.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
