LSE+ Maths Hub is part of a network of 40 Maths Hubs across England under the Maths Hubs Programme, initiated in 2014 and funded by the Department for Education (DfE). Coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), LSE+ Maths Hub supports over 450 schools and colleges in Bexley, Greenwich, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, and the City of London. The Hub provides high-quality professional development and fosters collaboration to develop and share effective mathematics teaching practices. Our mission is to ensure all students experience the best possible maths education, nurturing future mathematicians.

Role Summary

The Assistant Maths Hub Lead for Reception will play a key role within the Maths Hub Leadership and Management Team in ensuring effective delivery of ‘Best Start in Life’ (BSiL) and in doing so, will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to improvements in early maths provision and to improve outcomes for children. Each hub will have an Assistant Maths Hub Lead for Reception to support the work at a local level. The role focuses on supporting programme delivery, developing local leaders of mathematics education (LLME) expertise, and building strong relationships with schools and other partners including the Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs. The post is funded for 20 days per academic year in 2026/27. The postholder will also have the opportunity to engage in the equivalent of five days of additional (funded) development, as appropriate to their needs, in the summer term of 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of the MHLM Team to understand local needs in Reception.
  • Work as part of the MHLM Team to evaluate and communicate the impact of the Maths Hub’s work.
  • Facilitate an online community to support the hub’s LLMEs involved in Reception work (Targeted Support in Mathematics (TSM), Subject Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics (SKTM), Mastering Number (MN)), sharing updates and encouraging discussion in relation to early maths.
  • Identify and nurture potential future LLMEs with strong Reception experience.
  • Provide support to Intensive Support Partners for Reception-focused work where necessary (in liaison with AMHL (TS)).
  • Oversee Maths Hub programmes related to BSiL, including SKTM and Mastering Number, where appropriate in collaboration with AMHL (Primary).
  • Work closely with the NCETM team, ensuring timely and effective two-way communication to provide mutual support and challenge in relation to the BSiL offer.
  • Build and maintain relationships with system partners such as Early Years Stronger Practice Hubs, including attending forums and exploring collaborative opportunities.
  • Promote the BSiL offer to local stakeholders.
  • Ensure effective communication with the MHLM Team, which includes attending relevant hub meetings, and planning and evaluation and training.
  • Support recruitment to Reception-focused programmes (SKTM, MN, TSM) by agreeing and implementing an effective recruitment strategy with the MHLM Team.
