Our client, a prominent player in the marine industry, is offering an excellent opportunity for a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their RAS/FAS Value Stream team in Gateshead, UK. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will become part of the Marine industry\’s leading edge, utilizing your skills and experience to the full in an environment where excellence is always paramount.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical delivery of projects, overseeing a multi-disciplinary team
- Develop Mechanical Engineering solutions that fulfil client requirements, progressing from requirements capture through concept design to product development, commissioning, and in-service support
- Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities
- Investigate safety and technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Provide technical reference and guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers; approve and witness factory tests and inspections at suppliers\’ works
- Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance and approval to suppliers
- Check the technical work of others and provide technical guidance to colleagues in other departments as well as to suppliers and customers
- Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies
- Manage requirements, risks, assumptions, interfaces, and issues during all design phases
Job Requirements:
- BEng in a Mechanical Engineering discipline or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience
- Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with the IMECHE or other relevant institute
- Engineering experience relevant to this role
- Experience of working in a highly regulated industry
- Previous experience in the marine or offshore oil and gas industry is preferred
- Proven track record in leading the technical delivery of projects to quality, cost, and schedule
- Experience spanning concept, product development, and in-service (ILS) support
- Experience with creation of equipment assembly arrangements and Engineering Bills of Materials using an ERP/MRP system
- Assessment of designs to ensure code compliance using hand calculations and Finite Elements Analysis (FEA)
- Production of technical specifications, test procedures, and technical manuals for marine application mechanical systems and components
- Experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Creo
- Competent user of MS Office suite of programmes
- Conversant with BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 for the production of drawings
- Ability to work in a controlled documentation environment, be self-motivated, and positively contribute to a coherent team
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with formal external approval bodies such as marine classification societies and UK Ministry of Defence departments
Some contracts are for the UK Ministry of Defence, and as such, the successful applicant will be required to successfully attain UK BPSS or SC Clearance with no caveats.
