A contract position Inside IR35 on site in West Sussex. Our client, a leading consultancy in the automotive sector, is currently seeking a Mechanical Development Engineer to join their team. This contract role demands a solid understanding of automotive components, systems, and associated vehicle parts. Proven Powertrain experience is essential and ideally knowledge on transmissions. The role involves close collaboration with OEMs, suppliers, and test, design, and analysis teams to define testing plans, analyse results, and recommend design changes. Projects may require working independently or as part of a cross-functional international team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing teams and preparing proposals
  • Understanding product development processes for powertrains and transmissions
  • Developing system and component specifications
  • Conducting rig and system validation testing
  • Utilising instrumentation and data capture tools
  • Conducting FMEAs and preparing DVPs (Design Validation Plans)
  • Employing structured problem-solving techniques (e.g., 8D, DAMAIC)
  • Preparing and executing test procedures and post-test teardowns
  • Applying metrology skills
  • Handling component manufacturing, supplier liaison, and design release processes
  • Test planning, execution, and reporting
  • Interfacing with engineering teams and specialists

Job Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of powertrain systems, their components, and functional requirements
  • Experience in the automotive engineering sector
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to practical problems
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong PC and presentation skills
  • Technical task management of projects and engineers
  • Willingness to travel and work on client sites as required
  • Understanding of CAE and CFD techniques
