About the role

As a People Advisor, you'll provide a comprehensive and professional People Service for Matalan's Retail Stores, Distribution Centres and Head Office managers and employees across a full range of ER activities as part of the People Shared Service team. This could include, but isn't limited to, discipline, grievance, performance management and appeals within the short term absence, long term absence and family friendly policies etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for Employee Relations (ER) queries for stakeholders in assigned areas across all three business areas.
  • Provide advice and guidance to stakeholders on how best to run ER processes from end to end, minimising risk for the business as much as possible whilst ensuring processes are concluded within a timely manner.
  • Review and monitor ER cases within designated area of responsibility to identify trends and concerns; work with the HR Manager and operational managers to proactively address issues.
  • Where required, attend formal and informal meetings relating to absence and performance management, disciplinary and grievance.
  • Prepare documentation relating to Employment Tribunals, liaise with ACAS and Company Solicitors, and attend Tribunal.
  • Support and guide the HR Assistants with management of their case load (relating to short term absence, long term absence and answering queries and supporting with solutions where possible).
  • By Line Managing, focus on the ongoing development of the Shared Service Assistants, ensuring that they become well rounded in terms of commerciality, coaching and delivering accurate and consistent advice.
  • Ensure accurate records of employment and personnel data are maintained including documentation resulting from any ER process, equal opportunities, ethnic monitoring and any required legislative reporting.
  • Provide advice on current employment legislation, playing an active part in the review, development and implementation of company HR policies and procedures.
  • Be part of the creation and delivery of regular HR Masterclasses to management across the business, ensuring understanding of key HR processes and Line Management responsibilities within each process.
  • To look at the 360 view of any situation, working closely with stakeholders to share HR expertise and exercise influencing skills to arrive at solutions which are manageable for all parties, whilst minimising business risk.

About You

  • CIPD qualified, or working towards qualification
  • 3-5 years proven experience in HR, ideally in a Shared Services environment.
  • Line Management experience is preferable, but not essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Resilient Team Player
