Ashbourne, Derbyshire | Engineering | Reports to: Engineering Manager
We are open to appointing at either Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer level. The level will be agreed after meeting you and understanding your experience, technical capability and readiness to take ownership.
About MasterMover
MasterMover designs and manufactures innovative electric tug and automation solutions that help organisations move heavy and complex loads more safely and efficiently. Our patented products are used by leading global industrial brands, supported from our UK headquarters and through sales operations and partners across international markets.
The opportunity
This is a practical mechanical design role with real influence over product performance, quality, manufacturability, cost and serviceability. You will work across our established machine portfolio, improving current products and helping develop robust new components, assemblies and systems. You will collaborate closely with Production, Purchasing, Quality and the wider Engineering team, combining sound analysis with hands-on feedback from the shop floor, prototypes and field use.
For a more experienced candidate, the role will also include greater technical ownership: leading complex design work, guiding other engineers, chairing design reviews and strengthening engineering standards and consistency.
What you will do
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems from improvement concept through to detailed design release.
- Produce accurate 3D models, 2D drawings, specifications and supporting engineering documentation.
- Improve the performance, robustness, cost, manufacturability, assembly and serviceability of existing products.
- Apply design for manufacture and assembly principles across sheet metal, fabricated and machined components.
- Work with Production and operators to capture real-world feedback and resolve design or manufacturing issues.
- Collaborate with Purchasing, Quality and other engineering functions on cost reduction, quality improvement and supplier-related changes.
- Support prototypes, testing, validation and field evaluation, ensuring the final solution achieves its design intent.
- Contribute to design reviews, root cause analysis, corrective actions and engineering continuous improvement.
- Ensure designs meet agreed functional requirements, specifications, relevant standards and internal engineering processes.
What we are looking for
- A degree, HNC/HND, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering or a related discipline.
- Competence using 3D CAD such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks or a comparable package.
- A sound understanding of mechanical design principles and the ability to interpret and produce technical drawings and specifications.
- Practical knowledge of sheet metal, welded fabrications, machined parts and associated manufacturing processes.
- An understanding of design for manufacture and assembly, with an interest in cost-effective and user-centred design.
- A methodical approach to problem-solving, along with strong attention to detail and clear documentation.
- A collaborative, can-do approach, with the confidence to take initiative and see work through to release.
What would indicate Senior Design Engineer level
You do not need to meet every point below to apply. These are indicators of the scope we would expect at senior level:
- A track record of independently delivering robust mechanical designs across multiple or technically complex projects.
- The ability to make and explain sound engineering decisions, balancing performance, compliance, manufacture, cost and service needs.
- Experience leading design reviews and taking technical ownership from concept through validation and release.
- Confidence resolving complex design or manufacturing problems using structured root cause analysis and corrective action.
- Experience coaching, reviewing or providing technical direction to other engineers.
- Evidence of improving design standards, engineering processes, product architecture or team consistency.
