Contextual Overview

Mastercard is hiring a Legal Counsel to join its Services Legal team (Europe region), providing dedicated legal support to the Global Open Banking and Developer Experience business unit. The role is based in London, UK or Copenhagen, Denmark , and focuses on European and international development of next-generation open banking products and solutions. The position reports to a Director, Legal Services, and involves both product legal support and corporate governance activities.

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Qualified Lawyer with a strong academic background
  • Prior experience in commercial contracting, technology law, and/or financial regulation
  • Ability to identify regulatory, data privacy, and intellectual property issues
  • Experience supporting new product development (any industry considered a strong asset)
  • Strong drafting, written/oral communication, and negotiation skills
  • Interest in financial services and payment technologies

Responsibilities & Scope of Work

  • Product Support: Provide legal support across the full product lifecycle – from development to launch – ensuring compliance with Mastercard policies, applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards
  • Commercial Contracts: Draft, review, negotiate, and manage commercial agreements with customers, suppliers, and partners
  • Dispute Resolution: Handle and advise on disputes with third-party suppliers and clients
  • Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with internal specialists including franchise, regulatory, data privacy, IP counsel, and compliance teams
  • External Counsel Coordination: Instruct and manage external legal advisors within agreed policy and budget
  • Corporate Governance: Support board and management reporting and committee activities
  • Role requires some travel and ability to support multiple time zones
