Overview

Data Centre Infrastructure Apprentice at Mastercard. We design, build and operate industry-leading bank account-based payment systems. Our technology powers the UK’s real-time payments, settlements and direct debit systems, as well as networks of over 55,000 ATMs. We process over 90 percent of salaries, more than 70 percent of household bills and almost all state benefits.

As a Data Centre Infrastructure Apprentice you will work in world class data centres that run critical national infrastructure for the UK finance industry. You will work alongside Data Centre Infrastructure Engineers to ensure IT equipment and cabling is installed and maintained to allow critical services to run reliably.

Responsibilities

  • Cabling installation and decommissioning: installing new racks and cabling systems (copper Cat 6 and multimode fibre optic) according to specifications and industry standards; decommissioning of redundant cabling systems and racks.
  • Cable management: ensuring proper cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment.
  • Troubleshooting and repair: identifying and resolving issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems.
  • Testing and documentation: conducting tests to ensure the quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintaining accurate documentation of the cabling infrastructure.
  • Equipment installation and decommissioning: assisting with the installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware; decommissioning equipment when it is no longer in use.
  • Environmental monitoring: monitoring the physical environment of the data centre, including temperature, airflow and power; work with the Data Centre Engineering department to report issues and find solutions.
  • Collaboration: working with other Data Centre Engineers, contractors, and Network Engineers to ensure the smooth operation of the data centre.
  • Following procedures: adhering to safety regulations, industry standards, and company-specific procedures.

All About You

  • Technical knowledge: previous experience is not required, but desirable if you have started or completed engineering or structured data cabling studies. The most important factor is a desire to develop a career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering.
  • Troubleshooting skills: ability to assess and diagnose issues related to cabling and network connectivity.
  • Physical dexterity: comfortable with hands-on engineering work, manual handling, working at height, and long periods on their feet; ability to work with hand and power tools and in confined spaces.
  • Attention to detail: ensure accuracy in cable installation, updating records and testing.
  • Communication skills: able to communicate effectively with team members, project teams and data centre staff.
  • Safety awareness: prioritise safety in all tasks and complete mandatory health and safety trainings.
  • Training: willingness to attend industry training courses during the apprenticeship and thereafter (e.g., structured cabling, health and safety, electrical safety, confined spaces).
  • Computer skills: proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook and able to learn other company software applications.
  • General attributes: punctual and reliable; able to work independently and with others; flexible, proactive, and capable of effective time management and prioritisation.
