Senior Claims Handler – EL / PL - About the Role

My client are looking for an experienced Senior Claims Handler – EL/PL to join their specialist liability claims team who manages a diverse portfolio of liability claims on behalf of leading insurers.

As a Senior Claims Handler, you will take ownership of claims from cradle to grave, providing a proactive, technically excellent claims service in line with each insurer's claims philosophy, policy requirements and agreed service standards.

The role will primarily involve handling complex claims above the £25,000 fast-track threshold, requiring strong technical knowledge, sound judgement and excellent negotiation skills.

Senior Claims Handler – EL / PL – Key duties

  • Establish policy coverage and confirm whether the appropriate indemnity is in place.
  • Accurately record and maintain claims information on the digital claims handling system.
  • Proactively investigate liability claims through desk-based investigations and, where appropriate, by instructing loss adjusters and other specialists.
  • Assess evidence and make informed decisions on liability.
  • Manage claims proactively through to resolution, including negotiating appropriate settlements.
  • Ensure claims are handled in accordance with relevant legislation, legal timescales, client SLAs and internal procedures.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with insurers, brokers, solicitors, loss adjusters and other key stakeholders.
  • Apply knowledge of policy wordings, terms and conditions when assessing coverage and liability.
  • Accurately value personal injury claims and maintain appropriate reserves in line with reserving philosophies.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules and Claims Portal.
  • Handle a broad range of Casualty claims, including Personal Injury, Employers' Liability, Public Liability, Construction and Products Liability.
  • Apply technical knowledge across relevant UK jurisdictions.
  • Authorise claims payments within agreed financial authority limits.
  • Support the development of junior colleagues by providing coaching, mentoring and technical guidance.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of claims-handling standards and processes.

Strong technical knowledge across a range of EL/PL and Casualty claims.

Experience handling complex and higher-value personal injury claims.

A good understanding of policy coverage, wordings and terms and conditions.

Strong knowledge of the UK insurance market and liability claims environment.

Experience assessing and valuing personal injury claims.

A sound understanding of claims reserving principles.

Knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and Claims Portal.

Strong negotiation and decision-making skills.

The ability to manage a caseload proactively from initial notification through to settlement.

Experience working within client SLAs and regulatory/legal deadlines.

Experience within an insurance, claims or legal environment.
