Definition

The Weymouth Public Libraries seeks a motivated, enthusiastic team player with superior customer service skills who is comfortable with emerging technologies to join our reference department. This position would consist of sub-professional and technical library work involving the delivery of direct technology assistance and general reference services. This would involve assisting patrons in using library services, computers and technology, and facilities. Requires exemplary customer service skills and knowledge of Windows computers, smartphones and tablets and other devices as well as apps and downloadable media. Our culture of “Yes!” has resulted in a large growth in programs and services for grateful and increasingly engaged library patrons and local decision makers. We are fortunate to be in a state-of-the-art new building, which has a Digital Media Lab Makerspace, 46 public computers as well as meeting and study rooms, equipped with collaboration tools and device mirroring capabilities.

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Head of Reference & Adult Services. Receives oral or written instructions from the Head of Reference & Adult Services and Library Assistant Director. Plans work according to established procedures and prioritizes tasks within work assignment.

Work is performed under typical public library conditions. Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours. In addition, required to work two evenings and weekends on a rotating basis. Operate computer and other standard office equipment. Daily contact with library patrons and staff. Occasional contact with other town departments, vendors, and other library organizations by phone, in person, and in writing.

Essential Functions

As part of a reference team, provides general library reference services, reader’s/listener’s/viewer’s advisory service, and technology assistance to a diverse public, primarily adults and teenagers at the public service desk. Provides desk coverage for the Teen Room as needed.

Provides desk coverage on the reference desk, as part of a team or solo. Provides general reference service using a variety of resources. Provide 1-on-1 assistance and instruction with public computers and multi-function machines, along with other devices. Assists users with meeting room technology. Performs reader\’s advisory service and interlibrary loan. Contributes to collection development by suggesting materials for purchase based on need and patron requests. Ensures operation of public access computers and printers including start-up and shut down; assists patrons in use of library catalog and basic computer operations. May troubleshoot issues with copiers, printers, digital displays, booking and printing software including level 1 or 2 IT support via administrative interface or vendor support.

General Functions: Greets visitors to library and assists library patrons in use of public computers, accessing materials, and responds to requests for information and assistance. Keeps current with professional issues, trends, and new library and consumer technologies. Is knowledgeable of policies and for network holds and routing, interlibrary loan. Participates in Old Colony Library Network committees and roundtables. Assists with training new employees.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree; 1 year library experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education. Experience working in a public library setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

Knowledge: Knowledge of the principles and purposes of library science and the basic services normally provided by libraries; basic library practices and techniques including reference. Working knowledge of the needs and interest of the patrons utilizing the services to which assigned

Ability and Skill: Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of library/related records; ability to explain library facilities, resources and uses to others; effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to work creatively, effectively, independently, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large. Ability to foster open communication and cooperative relationships.

Physical Requirements
Light physical effort required in carrying and shelving books, and in performing other typical library functions. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and climbing. Ability to operate a keyboard at an efficient speed. Frequently required to sit and talk or hear, use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 20 pounds. May work outside on occasion.
