Library Professional Associate – Digital Services Librarian, Shrewsbury Public Library (Shrewsbury)

Under the general direction of the Assistant Library Director, the Library Professional Associate – Digital Services Librarian plays a key role in advancing the library’s digital strategy and technology services. This position is responsible for providing hands-on technology training and support to the public, and for ensuring seamless access to digital resources for both patrons and staff.

Oversees the selection, licensing, negotiation, evaluation, and archiving of electronic resources, and leads library-wide initiatives to enhance digital access, discovery, and user experience. This role requires strong technical expertise, a customer-focused mindset, and the ability to work independently within established procedures and departmental guidelines. Complex issues and unique challenges are referred to the Assistant Library Director as needed.

• Installs, configures, maintains, and troubleshoots electronic equipment and systems, including computers, digital projectors, printers, scanners, cameras, tablets, barcode readers, and more.

• Diagnoses hardware and software issues and implements appropriate solutions.

• Works in collaboration with the Town’s IT Department to manage the Local Area Network (LAN).

• Administers security software and systems across all public and staff computers.

• Supports the Technology Specialist in maintaining the library’s robust Makerspace.

Digital Resources & Applications

• Manages online reference databases and other electronic services; evaluates usage and oversees renewals or transitions.

• Provides support for staff applications such as Evergreen (or a similar integrated library system), G-Suite, Microsoft Office, Adobe products, and other productivity tools.

• Provides staff and patron support for a wide range of web-based applications and proprietary reference databases.

• Evaluates and recommends the acquisition of electronic resources, software, and technology equipment; coordinates service work as needed with vendors and the Library Director.

• Makes technology-related budget recommendations to the Library Director as part of the library’s broader development strategy.

Training & User Support

• Develops and implements technology training programs and creates supporting documentation for staff and patrons.

• Delivers responsive and knowledgeable assistance to patrons seeking help with digital services and library technologies.

Web & Network Administration

• Administers the library’s website and ensures it remains current, accessible, and userfriendly; familiarity with HTML is required.

• Serves as the Library’s Coordinator to the Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (CW MARS) network.

• Stays current with emerging library technologies and trends, assessing their potential impact on library services.

• Plans and delivers adult programs related to technology and digital literacy.

Other Duties • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

ALA accredited Masters of Library and Information Sciences degree; at least two years’ experience and skills in technology systems and equipment; experience with PC, tablet and LAN maintenance and troubleshooting; experience with web design; experience with basic library operations and reference services, including e- books and other library downloadable content; experience with the online library environment, specifically Evergreen, preferred. Experience with basic network administration and network cabling preferred. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, practices, and current trends, particularly as they relate to digital services and technology integration in a public library setting. Demonstrated ability to work independently with sound judgment, effectively prioritize tasks, and adapt quickly to evolving technologies and changing service needs. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet established deadlines in a dynamic environment are essential. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, are required to effectively engage with patrons, colleagues, and community partners. A proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving and teamwork, with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in public service. A genuine enthusiasm for working with diverse populations, including individuals of all ages and abilities, is essential, as is a passion for promoting digital literacy and equitable access to technology.
