Overview
Library Assistant, YMLA-Ware\βs Public Library (Ware): This position will handle library circulation duties mainly in the Adult library, but will include some Childrenβs Room coverage. Service to patrons of all ages will include checking books in and out, registering patrons for library cards, shelving books and materials, and assisting patrons in finding books and using library computers, printers, fax machine and other equipment. Other duties may include data entry, collection maintenance, and help with library programs. Some weekend and evening work will be required.
Major duties include circulation functions such as checking materials in and out, renewing materials, placing and cancelling holds, and creating and updating patron records.
Assist patrons with using library computers for searching the library computer, library website and book catalog, and basic word processing. Assist patrons in using printers, photocopiers, printing from patron phones and sending faxes.
Pull materials for delivery to other libraries, place into delivery bins and receive bins with items coming in from other libraries and being returned. Pull and prepare materials for Inter-library loans outside of local library consortium.
Shelve materials returned to the library and maintain order of materials.
Answer basic reference questions in person and over the phone. Refer questions to Library Director as necessary.
Assist in opening and closing procedures.
Handle money and make change. Assist patrons with payments for lost or damaged library materials. Prepare overdue notices as necessary.
Order new books. Process books to ready them for circulation and repair books as necessary.

Physical requirements and working conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for much of the day, including up and down stairs.
- Ability to bend, crouch or reach to shelve and retrieve materials.
- Ability to empty book drop and carry books into the library.
- Ability to lift books and book bins which may weigh up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to communicate in person and over the phone.
- Ability to work in an environment with distractions such as phones ringing, programs going on and the need to help multiple people at one time.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include a Saturday rotation and 1-2 evenings per week.
Qualifications
High school diploma/GED required, college degree preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Canva and general computer skills, as well as ability to troubleshoot office equipment and printers. Strong customer service and organizational skills are essential. Public library or bookstore experience is desirable. Applicant must be able to pass a CORI check.
