The Opportunity: Patient Care Associate | Inpatient Oncology - Lunder 9

Lunder 9 is a thirty-two-bed adult inpatient acute care medical oncology unit that provides Relationship Based Care. Most of the patients cared for on this unit have a diagnosis of lymphoma, multiple myeloma, sarcoma, or a solid tumor cancer. Patients are cared for throughout the cancer trajectory - from time of diagnosis, treatment and through end of life. Patients admitted to this oncology unit require complex oncology care which includes Phase 1 clinical trials, complex chemotherapy regimens, targeted therapy, radiation therapy, proton therapy and palliative care. The complexities of care provided to our patients also consist of medical management related to their disease or treatment. Pain management, palliative care, emotional and spiritual support, and end of life care are also integral in the care we provide. Integrative complementary therapies, acupuncture, massage, art and music therapy are also available to our patients on the unit. Our goal is to provide compassionate, expert, individualized care to all of our patients and families affected by cancer.

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) will assist the RNs in Lunder 9 with a variety of functions including phlebotomy and EKGs, transport patients, check rooms and equipment, assist patients with dressing and feeding and some clerical functions. Our Patient Care Associate team prides themselves in responding to patient requests in a timely manner, safeguarding patient confidentiality, monitoring patient safety, and always communicating in a respectful manner.

Summary

Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Also assists with taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Essential Functions

  • Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes, and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.
  • Completes all documentation in the medical record as required.
  • Interacts with patients and their families effectively.
  • Helps patients with a number of basic hygiene tasks. This may include bathing and dressing patients, helping them use the toilet if needed, and feeding them.
  • Assist with helping patients turn and reposition themselves in bed as needed and help them move between the bed and a wheelchair if they use one.
  • Listens to any health concerns patients may have and report those concerns to the nurses.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • Licenses and Credentials: Basic Life Support [BLS Certification] preferred; Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification] preferred; Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic [Massachusetts] preferred; Nursing Assistant [LNA - New Hampshire] preferred
  • Experience: Experience working in patient care/elder care 1-2 years preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong patient/customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Proficient computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.
