Job Summary

Responsible for ensuring that radiation safety measures are in place and adhered to. This role also focuses on maintaining relevant equipment and regulatory compliance in conjunction with other employees.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements radiation safety protocols to ensure the protection of workers, patients, and the general public from radiation exposure.
  • Conducts radiation surveys, collects data, and analyses results to identify radiation sources and monitor radiation levels.
  • Calibrates radiation monitoring equipment and ensures that it is functioning properly.
  • Ensures that the organisation is compliant with relevant radiation safety regulations and standards.
  • Responds to radiation incidents and emergencies, including conducting investigations and providing support to affected individuals.
  • Maintains accurate records and documentation related to radiation safety activities and incidents.
  • Communicates with regulatory agencies, staff members, and management to ensure that everyone is aware of radiation safety procedures and protocols.

Qualifications

  • Completion of some college level coursework, bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Some knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Computer and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be willing to work with radiation and radioactive materials.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic radiation and contamination surveys in clinical use areas.
  • Assist in decontamination of persons and property as needed.
  • Identify potential radiation safety hazards and assist in devising solutions to prevent recurring problems.
  • Assist in the performance of periodic quality assurance and accuracy testing on clinical dose calibrators.
  • Assist in calibration of survey instruments.
  • Assist in quality assurance program for protective lead aprons.
  • Assist in periodic overview of non-Radiology X-Ray facilities.
  • Assist in the administration of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Provide patient and family counselling regarding radiation hygiene as needed.
  • Maintain records related to same day therapeutic treatment or release from quarantine.
  • Routinely perform decontamination and release of patient rooms.
  • Manage the credentialing of providers to use fluoroscopy in the clinical setting.
  • Track and confirm annual training requirements with the Credentialing Office to ensure compliance.
  • Manage the logging and reporting of patient skin doses from non-radiology interventional fluoroscopy procedures.
  • Perform and assist with shipments of radioactive materials.
  • Assist in the clinical personnel dosimetry program.
  • Manage the declared pregnant worker monitoring program and assist with technical aspects of the ALARA program.
  • Assist in "special dosimetry" projects.
  • Perform periodic inventory and leak testing of sealed sources.
  • Manage logistics and records for radiation detector calibrations.
  • Share in on-call duties for clinical compliance program.
  • Assist with daily QA testing for thyroid bioassay equipment.
  • Serve as a member of Radiation Safety Emergency Response Team (RSERT).
  • Assist as needed in the performance of other duties of the Radiation Safety Office.
