Purpose for this role: To support the Senior Grid Manager in delivering the end‑to‑end grid connection process for the UK Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio, with additional support to global offshore wind as required. The role will focus on managing grid connection applications, Grid Connection Offers, coordinating technical studies, and ensuring compliance with G99 and Grid Code requirements. The Grid Manager will interface with internal teams, including development, construction, and procurement as well as external stakeholders such as DNOs, Transmission Owners (TOs), NGESO, Ofgem, and technical consultants. This position offers hands‑on experience across grid connection contracts, power system studies, and regulatory engagement, contributing to the successful delivery of strategic energy infrastructure projects.
BESS Grid Connection Management:
- Development: Support BESS projects from early development by providing grid related expertise. Analyse connection options, costs, and programme impacts, advising on technical and commercial implications. Review connection offers, identify reinforcement schemes, and project‑specific requirements. Review curtailment studies and provide grid and power system insights to support commercial business case development. Maintain clear communication across stakeholders, ensuring grid risks and opportunities are well understood.
- Construction: Work closely with the construction team in the electrical system design and grid integration of the project. Ensure the power system design complies with the grid requirements and the connection agreement. Ensure the requirements are clear to the contractors and internal teams. Review Grid compliance study reports and grid compliance test results. Be the main point of contact and manage the interface with the grid. Manage Power System data and modelling of the BESS assets. Manage Contractors and Power System consultants to deliver the reports on time and in quality. Liaise with DNO/TO/NESO regarding the grid compliance process.
- Industry Engagement: Participate in grid‑related industry forums, working groups and consultations to contribute ideas, stay informed on emerging best practices, and represent the organisation’s interests in the evolving energy landscape.
- Strategic Grid Planning & Policy Monitoring: Support the tracking and interpretation of key policy and regulatory developments such as the Grid Connection Reform and the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA) to identify potential impacts and opportunities. Assist in tracking and interpreting changes to transmission planning methodologies and strategic frameworks including the Transitional Centralised Strategic Network Plan (tCSNP), Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP), Future Energy Scenarios (FES), and Clean Power 2030 (CP2030) to inform project development and stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Offshore Wind Grid support: Engage and maintain a good relationship with the counter parts from our partners. Support the wider Offshore team in the Due Diligence activities. Support our JV partners regarding the grid connection processes from initial assessment to final agreement.
- Manage sub‑contractors, vendors and suppliers: Support and manage external consultants for any grid related work. Develop and maintain a network of stakeholders and explore collaborations.
Qualifications Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or any other related field.
Preferred Experience:
- At least 5 to 7 years of experience in the power generation/distribution/transmission industry.
- Experience in successfully completing Grid Connection and Compliance of renewable energy assets.
- Experience in management and commercial understanding of the UK Grid market with expertise in DNO connections.
- Experience of development and execution of large‑scale infrastructure projects.
Job‑Specific Skills:
- In depth knowledge of grid connection process at distribution and transmission voltages of the BESS and renewable energy sector.
- Solid understanding of the key concepts, regulation and stakeholders of the UK Distribution & Transmission System and associated processes.
- Solid understanding of the Power system analysis and capabilities of various tools needed to perform the rating and performance studies.
- Experience in performing studies in RMS and EMT tools, and capability to perform them in house if needed - Load Flow, short circuit, harmonic, flicker, insulation coordination, G99/Grid Code compliance.
- Ability to review power system analysis reports and test results delivered by consultants (FAT/SAT) to identify any issues in the modelling and control system of the assets.
- Familiar with various BESS OEMs and BOP contractors and their capabilities.
- Proactive self‑starter committed to adhere to a safe working environment.
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to work in a dynamic fast paced and diverse environment.
- Advanced project management and negotiation skills to persuade and influence decision makers to deliver relevant solutions for the business.
- Contract administration and legal skills.
