Job Description:

Main Purpose of Job

To direct, lead, control, evaluate, monitor, and supervise the duties of subordinates within the Latent Prints/Impressions Unit at the Berlin Lab. Perform all latent prints duties of the Forensic Scientist position and complete administrative duties as required.

Position Duties

  1. Supervises the operation of the Latent Prints/Impressions Unit at the Berlin Lab
  2. Analyzes forensic casework involving latent print evidence, including comparison and development, and provides courtroom testimony as an expert witness
  3. Performs or is responsible for administrative duties of the Latent Prints/Impressions Unit at the Berlin Lab
  4. Keeps abreast of new technical and scientific developments

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science, or related physical, natural, or forensic science from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Five years in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence, including experience providing testimony as an expert witness in court.

Notes:

  • Additional experience performing similar work can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience at another accredited crime laboratory can substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • A Master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience.
  • A Doctorate degree can substitute for two years of experience.

Selective Qualifications

Experience in latent print impressions, courtroom testimony as an expert witness, and related forensic work.

Desired or Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory
  • Experience as a Technical Assessor for ANAB, A2LA, or similar
  • Expert witness experience in Daubert or Frye-Reed proceedings
  • Leadership experience in a forensic setting
  • IAI Certification

Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

  • Motor vehicle operation license valid in Maryland if required.
  • Relevant forensic discipline certification or license as mandated.

Special Requirements

  • Availability 24/7 with a reachable phone number.
  • Subject to random drug testing and background checks, including polygraph.
