Job Summary: Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the OB Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the Delivery and Operating Rooms with necessary equipment, aiding nursing staff, performing patient care activities as delegated by a RN, and maintaining patient care supplies.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the care team in the formation of the patient’s plan of care to achieve desired outcomes for the patient based on physician preference cards, current assessment findings, diagnostic reports, and standards of care/practice.
  • Provides input for changes to physician preference cards according to surgeon's request.
  • Maintains and cares for equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares Delivery and OR rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
  • Follows aseptic technique in opening sterile supplies and during set up for specific obstetrics and gynecology procedures.
  • Drapes patients and assists the surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Communicates safe therapeutic care for patient throughout the patient’s perioperative experience.
  • Documents all care provided to the patient in the electronic medical record.
  • Assists in turnover and stocking of room between cases.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
  • Performs patient support duties under the direction of a RN, which may include, but are not limited to: venipuncture and starting IVs; obtaining vital signs, weights, and/or blood glucose; collecting, labeling, and transporting specimens; assisting with ambulation, toileting, and/or bathing and linen changes; inserting foley catheters and documenting input/output; assisting with newborn screening, and providing oral feeding and diapering to babies, as appropriate.
  • Participates in hospital-wide infection control plan and quality improvement process.
  • Demonstrates effective communication, customer service, and team building skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an approved formal program to include one of the following: Operating Room Technology, Surgical Scrub Tech, or Surgical Technology (six months experience preferred); or Practitioners who were actively practicing or attending a training program prior to October 1, 2022, who were permitted to register with the Virginia Board of Medicine under a transition period.
  • Registration with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist or Surgical Assistant required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant (67-100% of workday) walking, standing, use of arms and hands; frequent (34-66% of workday) bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting; ability to lift 35 lbs.; ability to push and pull 20 lbs.; auditory and visual skills to include color determination; ability to work in confined spaces; ability to reach above/overhead.
