Front Office AI & Investment Technology Specialist – Boutique Hedge Fund

Martis Search are delighted to be partnering with a successful, entrepreneurial and growing London-based Credit focused Hedge Fund to appoint a permanent “Front Office AI & Investment Technology Specialist.”

This is a newly created position offering an opportunity to work directly with Portfolio Managers, Investment Analysts and senior management to develop and implement innovative AI-driven solutions that enhance the firm's investment capabilities and contribute to increased revenue generation.

Our client is looking for a highly technical, commercially minded individual with approximately five years' professional experience within Financial Services, ideally gained within a Hedge Fund, Investment Bank, Asset Manager or Trading Company.

The successful candidate will have experience working closely with Front Office investment or trading teams, identifying business challenges and developing practical technology-driven solutions that improve efficiency, investment analysis, trading capabilities and commercial performance.

The ultimate objective of this appointment is to leverage AI and technology to help the Hedge Fund's Portfolio Managers and Investment Analysts make better-informed investment decisions, identify new investment opportunities and generate additional investment returns.

They are looking for someone who has previously held a dedicated AI position for a number of years within Financial Services. They are looking for an individual who possesses strong technical capabilities, understands how investment and trading businesses operate and can demonstrate an ability to use AI, programming, data and automation to solve complex commercial problems (i.e. understanding what is “under-the-bonnet” of AI and not someone who has picked up Chat GPT in the last year and thinks that they are now an AI expert).

This is a hands-on position requiring someone who can take ownership of an idea, develop a practical solution and successfully implement it within the investment business.

The role will report directly into a senior manager, with significant interaction with Portfolio Managers, Investment Analysts and senior leadership.

The firm currently utilises Enterprise versions of both Anthropic Claude and OpenAI ChatGPT and is looking to significantly expand its use of AI across the investment business.

The successful candidate will play a central role in identifying, developing and implementing these opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

• Work directly with Portfolio Managers, Investment Analysts Front Office professionals to understand their investment strategies, workflows, analytical requirements and commercial objectives.
• Identify opportunities where AI, automation and technology can improve investment research, portfolio analysis, trading processes and investment decision-making.
• Develop practical solutions that help Front Office teams identify investment opportunities, improve the quality and speed of investment analysis and enhance portfolio performance.
• Collaborate with investment professionals to identify complex problems and translate them into commercially valuable technology solutions.
• Develop tools and processes that reduce manual workloads, improve access to investment information and allow Portfolio Managers and Analysts to spend more time on revenue-generating activities.
• Evaluate the commercial impact of implemented solutions, including improvements in productivity, analytical capability, investment processes and potential revenue generation.

AI Development, Implementation & Automation

• Design, build, test and implement AI-driven tools and applications that support the firm's investment activities.
• Leverage large language models (LLMs), including OpenAI ChatGPT and Anthropic Claude, to develop practical solutions to complex investment and trading-related problems.
• Develop AI-powered research tools, investment analytics, data extraction processes and automated workflows.
• Identify opportunities to integrate AI with existing investment management systems, financial databases and internal technology platforms.
• Use programming, data analytics and automation tools to develop scalable solutions that improve business performance.
• Work with internal stakeholders to ensure AI solutions are reliable, secure, practical and appropriate for use within a regulated investment environment.
• Continuously evaluate emerging AI technologies and identify opportunities to apply them within the business.

Investment Research & Decision Support

• Develop tools that improve the speed, accuracy and efficiency of investment research and financial analysis.
• Help Portfolio Managers and Investment Analysts extract meaningful insights from large volumes of financial, market and company data.
• Develop automated processes to analyse financial statements, research reports, company announcements, market information and other relevant investment data.
• Explore opportunities to use AI to support investment idea generation, portfolio monitoring, risk analysis and investment decision-making.
• Work with Front Office teams to improve the accessibility, organisation and interpretation of investment information.

Stakeholder Engagement & AI Adoption

• Act as a key point of contact between Front Office investment professionals and the firm's technology and AI initiatives.
• Translate complex investment and commercial requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Demonstrate newly developed tools and provide guidance to Portfolio Managers and Investment Analysts.
• Support the adoption of AI across the investment business through training, demonstrations and ongoing collaboration.
• Contribute to the development of the firm's longer-term AI and investment technology strategy.

Key Requirements

• Approximately five years' professional experience within Financial Services, ideally gained within a Hedge Fund, Investment Bank, Asset Manager or Trading Company.
• Experience working closely with Front Office investment, trading, research or portfolio management teams.
• An understanding of how investment and trading businesses generate revenue and how technology can improve investment processes and commercial performance.
• Experience identifying business challenges and developing technical solutions that deliver measurable improvements.
• Exposure to Fixed Income, Credit, Equities, FX, Derivatives or other financial markets would be advantageous.

AI & Technical Capabilities

• Strong practical knowledge of AI technologies, including large language models and their application to complex business problems.
• Experience developing or implementing AI-enabled applications, automated workflows, analytical tools or technology solutions.
• Ability to use AI tools to analyse information, develop applications, automate processes and solve complex problems.
• Strong programming, data analysis or software development capabilities.
• Experience working with large datasets, financial information and complex analytical processes.
• Ability to translate business requirements into functional technical solutions.
• Understanding of AI model limitations, data security, validation and appropriate governance controls.

Commercial & Interpersonal Skills

• A commercially minded individual who understands that the purpose of technology is to improve investment capabilities and business performance.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify opportunities that may not be immediately apparent to investment professionals.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage directly with Portfolio Managers, Investment Analysts and senior management.
• Comfortable working independently, taking ownership of projects and delivering solutions from initial concept through to implementation.
• An entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to challenge existing processes and introduce new ways of working.
• Ability to work within a small, fast-paced and highly collaborative investment environment.

Education & Qualifications

• Strong academic background, ideally within Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physics, Finance, Economics or another relevant quantitative or technical discipline.
• Relevant professional experience and demonstrable technical achievements will also be considered.
• CFA, CQF or other relevant financial or technical qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential.

Salary & Benefits

£100,000–£500,000 per annum (dependent upon experience) and suitability, plus competitive bonus, pension, private healthcare and additional benefits.
