Role Overview

MRG is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead and deliver mechanical building services designs across a diverse portfolio of projects within the built environment sector, with a strong emphasis on Defence Estate infrastructure. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, support project delivery, and ensure high-quality engineering solutions are developed in accordance with client, regulatory, and security requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and coordination of mechanical building services systems including HVAC, heating, ventilation, chilled water, domestic water services, and specialist systems.
  • Produce and review detailed design calculations, specifications, reports, and technical drawings.
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers and support the development of engineering teams.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams including electrical, structural, architectural, and client representatives.
  • Attend client meetings, site surveys, technical workshops, and design reviews across Defence Estate projects.
  • Ensure compliance with current regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, HTMs, JSPs, and Defence-specific standards.
  • Support projects through all RIBA stages from concept design to construction and commissioning.
  • Review contractor submissions, resolve technical queries, and oversee commissioning activities.
  • Contribute to resource planning, programme management, quality assurance, and technical governance.
  • Promote sustainable and energy-efficient engineering solutions aligned with net-zero objectives.

Experience & Qualifications Required

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
  • Extensive experience in mechanical building services design within the built environment sector.
  • Strong experience delivering projects within Defence Estate, MOD, secure government, healthcare, or other highly regulated sectors is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design software including AutoCAD, Revit, IES, Hevacomp, and Microsoft Office.
  • Comprehensive understanding of CIBSE guidance, British Standards, and UK building regulations.
  • Demonstrable experience leading projects and managing technical delivery.
  • Strong technical reporting, specification writing, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, client engagement, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership with CIBSE, IMechE, or equivalent professional body is desirable.

Security Clearance Requirement

Due to the nature of projects undertaken by MRG within the Defence Estate, the successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain appropriate UK Security Clearance. Applicants must therefore be eligible to undergo security vetting and satisfy the requirements for Security Check (SC) clearance as a minimum.
