A leading power and grid engineering organisation is seeking a Senior Primary Electrical Design Engineer to support the delivery of high-voltage renewable energy and grid connection projects. The organisation specialises in technically complex electrical infrastructure, including contestable connection works, balance of plant, substations and wider power network solutions. With a strong focus on safety, reliability and sustainable design, it plays a key role in enabling the UK’s transition to cleaner energy.

The successful candidate will take technical ownership of primary electrical design across a portfolio of HV and EHV projects, predominantly up to 132kV, with opportunities to contribute to transmission-voltage work up to 400kV. Day to day, they will produce substation layouts, earthing designs, cable route drawings, equipment specifications, technical reports and associated design documentation. The role will involve working closely with procurement, site delivery teams, external suppliers, CAD technicians and wider engineering disciplines to deliver safe, compliant and high-quality design solutions. As a senior member of the team, they will also provide technical guidance, resolve design challenges and mentor junior engineers.

Experience Required

  • Significant experience in primary electrical design for HV/EHV AC substations and balance of plant projects, typically across 11kV to 132kV networks.
  • Proven background as a Primary Electrical Design Engineer, Primary Plant Engineer or similar within a consultancy, contractor, utility or power industry environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HV/EHV substation standards, installation requirements, power cable parameters, British and international standards, DNO requirements and CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Confident producing and reviewing technical documentation, including layouts, calculations, specifications, reports, risk assessments and plant/equipment design information.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D, with experience of 275kV/400kV projects, Revit, G81 standards or earthing software such as CDEGS considered advantageous.
