A leading engineering services organisation operating within the UK power and renewables sector. The business delivers high-voltage electrical design solutions across contestable grid connections, balance of plant and renewable energy projects, supporting infrastructure up to and beyond 132kV. With strong technical capability and a focus on safety, quality and compliance, the organisation plays a key role in strengthening and decarbonising the UK’s electricity networks.

The Senior Primary Electrical Design Engineer will take responsibility for the primary electrical and plant design of high-voltage substation and balance of plant projects, predominantly up to 132kV. The role involves producing detailed electrical layouts, specifications and design deliverables across AIS and GIS substations, renewable sites and grid connection works. Working closely with multidisciplinary design teams, the successful candidate will ensure designs comply with all relevant standards, legislation and client requirements throughout the project lifecycle. This is a senior technical role combining hands-on design delivery with mentoring, design assurance and technical support to site teams.

Experience Required

  • Degree, HND or HNC qualified in Electrical Engineering, with significant experience delivering primary electrical design for HV substations and balance of plant projects from 11kV to 132kV.
  • Proven expertise producing substation electrical layouts, earthing designs, cable routes, switchroom and control room layouts using AutoCAD (2D), with exposure to 3D tools such as Revit desirable.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK and international standards applicable to HV and EHV substations, including DNO requirements and G81 frameworks.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage complex design interfaces across disciplines, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations and embedding safety by design.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, providing technical guidance, and supporting project delivery through design assurance, reporting and site support.
