The organisation supports transmission and distribution network operators, renewable energy developers and major infrastructure projects, providing expertise in complex electrical systems up to 400 kV. As a Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer, you will play a pivotal technical role in the design, specification and configuration of protection and control systems for HV and EHV substations and renewable energy projects up to 400 kV. Working within a multidisciplinary electrical design team, you will interface with primary plant and substation equipment to ensure adherence to protection philosophies, Grid Code requirements and project standards. You will lead the development of detailed P&C schemes, undertake coordination and fault studies, prepare protection settings and technical documentation, and support FAT, SAT and commissioning activities. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the safe, reliable and efficient operation of critical UK electrical infrastructure.

Experience Required

  • Demonstrable experience designing HV/EHV protection systems (11 kV–400 kV) within the UK, with strong knowledge of DNO/TSO standards including ENA G99, G81 and National Grid ESO Grid Code.
  • Degree, HND or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred) and previous experience within a consultancy, contractor, EPC, DNO or TSO environment.
  • In-depth understanding of protection philosophies and schemes including line, transformer, busbar and generator protection, relay coordination, fault level studies and associated software (e.g. ETAP, DIgSILENT, PSCAD).
  • Hands-on experience with modern numerical relays and IEDs (e.g. Siemens, GE, ABB, SEL), IEC 61850 and associated communications protocols, and preparation of protection settings, logic and testing documentation.
  • Proven capability in producing and reviewing detailed secondary design deliverables including schematics, wiring diagrams, logic drawings, I/O schedules and AC/DC systems, with a strong understanding of UK standards and compliance requirements.
