This is a highly visible role at the intersection of complex litigation, regulation, and commercial decision-making.

Reporting to the General Counsel in London, you’ll lead our approach to E&O and professional liability disputes, shaping strategy from early assessment through resolution.

You’ll have broad exposure across the organisation, partnering closely with business and risk leaders to keep practices current as the legal and regulatory landscape evolves.

This is a role for a confident, pragmatic lawyer who can protect the firm, influence senior stakeholders, and help enable Marsh’s growth with clear judgment and disciplined risk management.

This role combines courtroom and dispute‑resolution experience with practical commercial judgment to protect the company’s legal and financial interests while enabling business operations.

  • Core responsibilities
  • E&O & professional liability litigation
  • Lead E&O/professional‑liability litigation (individual claims, multi‑claimant actions, and coverage disputes), from investigation to trial and appeal.
  • Develop and execute cost‑effective defense strategies; select, manage and oversee outside counsel, budgets and billing.
  • Coordinate with claims, underwriting, actuarial, risk and finance teams to evaluate reserve and settlement decisions and communicate legal exposure to executives and the board.
  • Negotiate and execute settlements, structured resolutions, and coverage/indemnity arrangements; manage settlement approvals and reporting.
  • Cross‑functional legal strategy & risk management
  • Advise product, sales, procurement and operations on legal risk trade‑offs involving professional liability.
  • Build playbooks and training for business teams on E&O exposures, incident response, data‑handling best practices and restrictive covenant compliance.
  • Maintain litigation trackers, KPIs and dashboards; prepare executive summaries and board materials on exposure, trends and remediation measures.
  • Contribute to overall management of litigation team and legal department strategy
  • Form part of Legal, Compliance and Public Affairs (LCPA) assistance to business with key product developments.
  • Assist with process, know-how and tool development for broader LCPA colleagues.
  • Contribute to continual development and improvement of LCPA functions and capabilities.
  • Key qualifications
  • Substantive litigation and regulatory experience, with demonstrable work on E&O/professional liability matters; in‑house and/or law‑firm backgrounds acceptable.
  • Extensive experience working closely with insurance industry associations, including LIIBA, BIBA and BIPAR on data privacy matters
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills, including commercial and vendor agreements with privacy/security clauses.
  • Excellent project management, financial stewardship (outsourcing/budget oversight) and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, prioritize competing demands and provide pragmatic business‑aligned advice.
  • Strong people and project management skills including an ability to drive and deliver projects on time, mentor and coach junior staff, and manage internal and external stakeholders through clear communication and delivery.
