Job Description

Senior Packaging Engineer

Hybrid working – Slough

Salary £55,000 to £70,000 (depending on experience) plus annual bonus and amazing benefits

As a Senior Packaging Engineer at Mars, you will be responsible for delivering new packaging design and development projects, from concept through to implementation in our factory network and beyond. In addition, you will be working on projects aimed at improving the design and performance of our existing packaging portfolio, and to ensure that opportunities to optimise costs and sustainability performance are incorporated.

You will be working cross-functionally within project teams and as part of a vibrant Regional Packaging team with great personal development opportunities too.

What are we looking for?

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of packaging materials, including flexibles, rigid plastic, cartons, and cases.
  2. Understanding of packaging sciences, packaging development, packaging legislation, food processing, and production.
  3. Demonstrable experience in leading category-wide projects in an FMCG environment, demonstrating project management skills, risk management, prioritization, and managing adverse groups of stakeholders.
  4. Experience working within flexible teams, Agile ways of working, and Design Thinking approaches.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  1. Own the technical packaging design and development for a variety of projects (of increasing complexity) with a focus on one or more product categories (Gum, Fruit Snacks, Chocolate, and Ice Cream) to support growth, value leadership, supply security, or sustainability.
  2. Creating packaging prototypes and ensuring successful line trials at Mars, co-packer, and co-manufacturing sites, ensuring the relevant documentation is produced and results are accurately recorded.
  3. Creating packaging designs and specifications that deliver the desirable KQA’s via robust risk management and the delivery of shopper, customer, and supply chain requirements.
  4. Working with cross-functional teams to deliver Desirable, Viable, Feasible, and Sustainable innovation, leading projects of different levels of complexity at the same time.
  5. Works with Regional and Global product development teams in building and delivering the innovation and existing pipelines.
  6. Proactively manages Intellectual Property risks & opportunities.
