The Packaging Compliance Technologist reports directly to the PQM lead and works both independently and collaboratively within the packaging compliance team. The role requires building strong relationships with packaging suppliers and cross‑functional teams to ensure high‑quality risk assessments are completed on time, with compliance progress continuously monitored and communicated. The purpose of this role is to ensure that all Mars packaging meets the required quality, product safety, and regulatory requirements, including compliance with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). This role involves working cross‑functionally and with suppliers to complete packaging risk assessments, specifications, and compliance documentation to a high standard and within agreed timelines. The Packaging Compliance Technologist will also drive continuous improvements in packaging compliance processes.
Education & Professional Qualifications
- A bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Food Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or an equivalent technical discipline is preferred.
- Background in packaging and/or quality is desirable from a couple of years in a similar scale of organisation.
Knowledge / Experience
- Strong quality mindset aligned with Mars’ first principle: “Quality.”
- Packaging compliance and interest in packaging.
- Some experience in a food manufacturing environment working in Quality, Food Safety, Engineering, or Product/Process Development is preferred.
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance and Hygiene programs such as HACCP and ISO 22000.
- Experience with internal and external audits is desirable.
- Experience with standards implementation is desirable.
- Proficient in computer skills with good working knowledge of software applications.
- Good project management experience, particularly across quality, efficiency, and growth projects, with the ability to motivate and work with a technical team.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams and with external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Accountable for delivering completed Packaging Risk Assessments covering all Mars portfolio primary packaging types (flexibles, rigids, paper, etc.) to a high standard and within agreed timelines.
- Support the implementation, verification, and reporting of relevant packaging compliance standards.
- Serve as the primary interface with packaging suppliers to ensure timely completion of packaging risk assessments, specifications and collection of necessary compliance documentation.
- Understand procedural control measures related to the Mars Packaging Quality Management (PQM) process.
- Track and report progress of compliance workstreams to the line manager regularly.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance compliance and process efficiency.
- Proactively support all packaging team members, acting as a backup when required, and support high‑performing collaboration.
- Build and share expertise in packaging compliance and risk assessments, championing best practices within the team.
- Ensure accurate documentation and reporting aligned with Mars quality and safety standards.
